GFO - what's the problem?

So I was maintaining my sump and noticed my GFo isnt so red anymore and it seems like there is GFo gunk all over my sump. Thoughts?View attachment 5384View attachment 5385 my skimmer has been off for 4 days. Also..... The GFo and the carbon look the same color. View attachment 5386

The tumble was to much... I get the same issue and use the BRS brand..

Slow it down and how much are you using?

I dont recall how much. Is this bad for my reef? Is does it make the GFo less useful?

Just had this problem too. Was too much tumble gfo is pain to get right

I use two avast reactors that are off my return pump line and feed back to sump. Gfo is dialed down with control valve and is very precise. Avast provides the valve. I know brs reactors are inexpensive but you get what you pay for. Avast lines are bigger so you do get more volume through it per hour. Jmo.

I use 2xTwo Little Fishes Reactor for GFO and carbon and very happy.. Keep in mind I only use one MJ1200 for both reactors. Use to have the BRS reactor and was feed up with clogging..

Your skimmer should take out the brown dust and try to clean much as possible in your sump.

It can be very irritating for clams and cause pinched mantle. Not sure about other negative effects.

My filter sick is grabbing a lot, and my skimmer keeps screwing up. My swabbie also needs to get refitted

You're supposed to change your gfo per the instructions. Some last longer than other others but all need to be replaced. The cheap stuff is usually good for 4-8 weeks depending on your load.

I haven't tried; is gfo magnetic? That might be a good way to clean it up. . .
