Goodbye tank or goodbye home...?

I need your expert opinions! My lovely, understanding, and wonderful landlord paid me a visit today and "asked" me to downsize my 125 to a 20 gallon or smaller (haha yeah right...) because she believes it is causing the small patch of mold in the room it's in. I think it is causing the mold because it evaporates 2-4 gallons daily depending on the weather.

There is no way I'm getting rid of my tank though, is there a way to fix the mold problem?

Thanks in advance.

1. Buy my big house you solve the problem...
2. Move/buy a house/condo/townhouse
3. Rent another house

He he he

How confined is the room? I think keeping it well ventilated would keep it from causing a mold outbreak. Try a dehumidifier or a fan, although that would likely increasethe evaporation from the tank.

I am in a townhouse already haha. Can I just live in your basement with your dog? Haha. Unfortunately I can't buy a house until I'm done with med school.

Thanks, it's not that confined at all. It's in the living room connected to all the rooms. It's literally a tiny patch i didn't notice until she so kindly inspected every inch of my place and pointed it out. Maybe I'll just spray with concentrated Lysol and hopefully the residue will keep it at bay lol. And I'll look into a dehimidifier.

Seems like you should just be able to kill the mold and be done with it then! Good luck

I did. Has anyone ever noticed mold around their tank? Is it normal? I don't think the tiny spot is really as much problem as she made it seem... I cleaned it up in literally one pass of a Lysol wipe.

I would think there's a leak. Hard to believe it's from evap, but what do I know..
It's on the ceiling a few feet from the tank so I don't think it's leaking. And I have leak detection on both sides of the tank.

Unless you're talking about the ceiling leaking rain water? Then I'm willing to displace blame on anything other than the tank haha.

Ive never seen a tank cause mold on a ceiling. Is the ceiling soft there might be coming from the roof or a above pipe also mold usually needs very dark areas to grow . Only thing ive ever done with a tank was broke two picture windows from all the humidity but was because poor installation they didnt leave room for expansion and crack lol . Its definitely nice have my own house i can complain to myself and ignore myself at same time lol

They just redid the insulation in the roof in summer. I'm suspecting she just wants us out. I offered to get a dehumidifier and a humidity meter to quantitatively measure and treat her concern. She flat out said no with no reasoning, "downsize or else the lease will not be renewed in March." I gladly will end the lease, but my wife is too attached to this home... and may I add... the landlord is her sister!

I would expect the indoor condensation to collect on the inside, opposite where the exterior insulation is poor, especially when the outside is cold. Good luck with your negotiation.

Just act like it never happened and deny having the argument. you can play hardball and tell her to evict you and ask for several continuances. If she is down to treat you like that, she deserves it.

Yes it's literally right over the front door... on the fast opposite side of the room of the tank.

Oh man, does tapatalk have an immediate multiple response button? Anyways. Yeah, I'm not going to argue with her for the sake of my wife. I'll let her be unreasonable all by her lonesome, I guess maybe it's time to buy a house and upgrade to a much larger tank? Haha, and then at family parties she can sit right in front of it and I'll say if it's too "humid" she can gtfo.

Oh dam her sister . I made same mistake and a buddy basically begged use to move into his new building told us how great it will be . I lived there 7yrs and never seen the dude really. And we use to hang out all the time but then when we decided to buy a house he got all butt hurt sayed im trying to f him. Long story short i lost one my best friends of 15 yrs over this . Get out while you can . I still have to see the dude and everytime i do i have to keep my self from smashing his face in . Friends family business and money do not mix and never ends good. My guess first its the tank then it be something else until you guys get pissed and move and they dont talk any more

It sounds more like a possible structural issue then a tank issue. Do you guys pay Market rent? Meaning do you guys being family pay equal rent to what anybody else living in the home would pay? Sometimes when it's family the tenant gets a discount from the family member owner. Sometimes, the family member owner feels like they should get more for rent then they should and the tenant sibling says "well it's my sister I should pay that much" when in reality you're overpaying for your place. Compare how much similar townhomes rent for and see if you're paying a decent price. If it was me, I would move, unless you're getting an exceptional discount. Make sure you count all your discounts, does the sister pay utilities? Will you have to pay utilities on the new place? If she pays the water bill or electric the water bill and electric bill might be really high. If you're still going to rent start looking for places that you would like to move. be up front about the aquarium and see if the owners would accept you as a tenant. I wouldn't mention the mold in your current place I don't think that's your fault I think that's a structural problem caused by the work that she had done. And remember your current landlord you're most likely going to see over and over years to come and it will be there's my brother-in-law who used to rent for me he's a ( fill in the blank ) good guy or SOB.

We pay maybe a 100 or 200 dollar discount at best, also all utilities are mine to pay. The sister had trouble selling and renting so my wife said, "hey itll help her and us if we rent." Ive basically been paying her sisters mortgage for 3 years and the neighborhood is crap. Got kids punching my garage as they walk by, steal/throw my garbage container in the pond, steal my packages, and my sister in law now trying to dictate what I can and can not have in my living room. I don't know much about buying a house, but I pay 1200 monthly... how much would it be monthly to mortgage a 3 bedroom 2 bath house? Id gladly move but my wife is too attached to our home. Ugh, this whole situation is just p***ing me off. Getting rid of the tank is not an option.
