I never updated you all on the status of the false sand bed removal. I cut away the silicone that was around the edges of the false sand bed. Then I put in water followed by the muriatic acid. After letting it sit for a hour, I found that it did not soften the false sand bed much. I very carefully used a round dremel cutting bit and cut a line directly down the center of the bed. I then used a pry bar and was able to remove the bed in two sheets. My observation was that the acid caused the bottom of the false bed to unseal from the glass floor of the tank.
