Help! Heater Malfunction!

Well, I woke up this morning to find my reef at 90 degrees. It is normally at 79. All my corals are closed and drooping. What do I need to do here? Will my coral bounce back? Will my fish make it through? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Put some ice cubes in a plastic bag ,zip it and put it in to the sump.Try to cool it slowly.Fish should be ok,some corals ,especially SPS might bleach.

Put ice on ziplock bags and put in the tank until temp goes down disconnect your heater too

Thanks Mark! I have no sps in the tank. Softies and LPS. Everything is closed up and a few have a mucous like substance coming off of them. I guess it's wait and hope for the best. Hopefully I will not have to worry about an ich outbreak as well?

Thanks. I know, but trying to convince my wife isn't easy. She hates the hobby, and gives me hell when I have to spend money on my tank.

Do you really need a heater in your tank? Where it is located in your house? I run my tank without a heater and my temp.stays 76-80 through out a year. If temp. doesn't drop below 76 you will be ok.

I put the bag of ice cubes in the sump, turned on the cieling fan above the tank, and took the top off the tank. The tank is cooling down, but I removed the ice. The tank was cooling down too fast. How slowly should the temp drop?

I unfortunately don't have a chiller. My tank is in my dining room on the outer wall of my house. It is away from all windows. My wife keeps the house at 68 in the winter. Not sure I could get by without a heater.

Mu tanks are in the office which is a room in between living room and family room and other tank is on opposite side of wall in the family room, I had a heat problem when my wife decides spring breeze coming in windows is good and puts the house @ 90 degrees and tank want to go even further with MH lighting cooking the water also. Ive had heaters fail and drop temps also but never lost anything from problem, I run 2 heaters per tank and they all run off controllers in case i have a failure! I bought the chiller used so i like to save money also.

That isn't bad but let it level out on it's own now and see how things are looking later today, Can't do anything else but give it time to settle!
Tank went from 90 at 8 am to 84 at 11:10 am. I'm guessing it is cooling down too fast?

Ugh! This is so **** frustrating! Everything was great before this happened. Just spent alot of money upgrading other equipment and now this. Guess I will just have to keep my fingers crossed.

If you did not have ich before introduced to your tank, you will not have outbreak.Ich is a parasite that has to be in your tank to spread. It will not develop on its own from nothing.Proper quarantine of fish is a must if you want your tank to be Ich free.I know most of us are guilty one time or another to put a fish in our tank without quarantine. 84 is not bad,let is stabilize on its own now.You just have to wait and hope for the best.If you have a lot of slime and mucous from your corals,I would run a reactor with carbon for a few hours to remove it.
