HELP - SPS Under attack?!

Did you THOROUGHLY rinse the GFO before putting the reactor online? The ferric oxide dust could very likely be the culprit.

I honestly dont remember as this thread is 1.5 yrs old. Pretty confident it wasn't red bugs as I remember none of my other sps frags were affected.

Sorry to jump in on this thread but when you say rinse do you mean running the media reactor? I have a BRS media reactor with carbon and gfo and I run about 2 gallons through it after I change to "rinse" or do you physically have to rinse it in RO/DI water?

I just use tap water and rinse and knead the media bag til the water runs clear. I've never had corals react badly to GFO though.

some guy (probably a jackass) at the LFS told me that rinsing it in tap water makes it run out faster because its absorbing impurities in the tap as you rinse it.

Oh it is...but not enough to do any damage during the 1 minute rinse. I use 2 table spoons of BRS hi-capacity in a media bag that sits in my CPR tumbler. It gets changed out montly.

When I change my GFO or Carbon, I use it as an opportunity for a WC. I put the new GFO/Carbon in and run the reactor into a 5 gallon bucket. I typically do 1 bucket per reactor. Very easy to do and I need a WC anyway. GFO is believed to be bad for clams and carbon dust is believed to cause HLLE in fish.

Oh that is brilliant! I will implement this in my tank maintenance schedule. Thanks Jon!!

That's great and smart. Thanks for the idea Jon.

Not a prob. One thing in addition that I like to do is during the washing phase have the GFO bouncing like crazy in order to get all the dust out of the stuff. After I finish I take out the GFO canister and clean out the top filter and put back and set it to the appropriate tumble action. This way any of the fine dust clogging the filter is gone and is runs a little smoother.
