Help! Strange Problem

it is really really weird (and lucky) that everything looks that happy. I am really perplexed by this. I agree with track. I'd take everything offline one at a time and clean the heck out of it with vinegar and hot water. Did you use pro-clear or any other cheleating agents to clear your water? Just plain strange. The xenia looks OK, but that is still my no1 suspect.

No, no clearing agents... In a little while I'm going to do what you said and clean each piece of equipment thoroughly, with vinegar. I removed the sponge from my SeaClone skimmer and now it's actually skimming a good bit.

Removing the pre-filter from the SeaClone skimmer I think has been the most effective thing I've done. Now that its not instantly clogging, I think it's helping get some of the nasty out of the water. I'm about to do yet another water change today because once again the HOB filter pad completely clogged within 24 hours...

It's clear but its so thick you can see it clogging the pores of the filter. My water looks pretty clear and nice and I see no obvious mucus from any of the corals. I tested again yesterday and the parameters were the same as always. (mentioned earlier in the post)

have you completely replaced the pads? I wonder if you have something actually growing from them. . . I would leave the prefilter off the skimmer if it were me. I want everything going in my skimmer. LOL

Completely replaced the pads. The slime is apparently not water soluble. The hottest tap water I can run on it has no effect and just runs off the edges of the pad and not through it... Can you believe I just spent 8 bucks on more SeaClone pre -filters?

I'm still not blaming the Xenia. I think some slime was produced and some palys "dissolved" BC the intake was positioned in the colony. That's my guess.

I took the xenias out of my tank this morning and already things are improving. I wasn't convinced they were the problem because they looked as happy as everything else, but I thought I would give it a try. The corals I thought looked happy before look even happier now; extra nice polyp extension and all. My filter, usually almost overflowing with slime by this time of night, remains un-clogged and functional. I think the mystery may be solved.
On a similar note, check out my 1 gallon xenia reef! No one wanted free xenia, and flushing any kind of coral just didn't sit well with me, so...

My 1gal xenia reef has already crashed. Apparently 2 angry xenias + 1gal seawater = stink-flavor Jello. At least now I know definitively what caused my slime problem.

yes, that is a pudding pop even Bill Cosby can't sell.

I dumped it down the sewer last night and my house still smells terrible... I don't think I'll ever have another xenia.
