I've got Flukes, Help!

Ive treated with prazi pro in my reef not long ago was fine i used it for internals i know jose used in reef too no issues

From what I've read, prazi only kills off worms and feather dusters. Pods and beneficial bacteria live right through it. There seems to be a lot of people that have had positive results from adding it to their DT. Many of them have had substantial amounts of corals. Like Eric said, most people said their corals didn't like it, but didn't die either. I've only got 3 corals and I'm not really concerned about them.

They will be breathing fast, sometimes using only 1 gill, flashing off of rocks/substrate & often you can even see the "bugs" sticking out of their gills.

You might also notice them near the water surface because the O2 is higher up there and they are trying to get more O2 since the flukes damaged their gills and they can't breath well anymore.

Just thought I'd update on what is going on since I last posted. I ran the Prazi for about 5 days with the skimmer and carbon off. Then I turned my skimmer and carbon back on for about two days. I did a 30% water change and then about two days later the PBT was still flashing and my niger trigger had a cloudy eye and I could see a fluke on it. I re-treated the tank with Prazi and went to Hawaii for 7 days, worried the whole time about what the situation would be when I got back, and had someone check on the tank a few times.

I got back on Tuesday and every fish looks good except the PBT. He has bumps on his skin but it isn't ich. He acts totally normal and still eats like crazy. I've turned the skimmer on again and this weekend I'll do another 30% water change. Then I'm going to re-treat with Prazi. So far, I've only lost one Anthias and it looks like I might get out of this with very minimal losses.

I think for the most part, Prazi is working for the flukes. It has had no impact on the minimal coral I have. The only thing I notice is that right after I add the Prazi, the fish all twitch and start pooping like crazy. The only other thing I've noticed is that my glass has been getting really dirty quickly. All parameters seem to be in check though.

They twitching cause they all probably had flukes prazi also treats for internals sometimes dont even know fish have em some times takes long long time show signs could be why tgey pooping more specially if it white i did notice also flukes takes longer then the usual 3-5 days as usual glad all is good .pbt might just have stress bumps i would watch it but probably not anything to worry about

I need some advice. I cannot seem to beat the fluke problem. I've been treating with prazi for almost a month now. I treated once, did a water change, treated again, did a water change, and treated again. I'll do another water change in the next few days. The problem hasn't gotten any worse, and I haven't lost any fish, but I can visibly see the flukes. Now, I know that people say you cannot see flukes, but the ones I can see on my niger trigger look exactly like what came off of my anthias when I did a fw dip. All of my fish look and act normal except my pbt and my niger. The niger is flashing and I can see flukes on him, probably because of the dark color. The pbt is flashing and I can see some bumps, but no actual flukes. Everyone is eating regularly and is still pretty active. Do you think the flukes I can see on the niger are opaque due to the prazi and they are dying? They are usually clear, right?

The question is, do i keep rolling with the prazi, or is it time to try something else? I've read that there are some strains of flukes that are resistant to certain treatments. Has anyone experienced this?

I'm just getting frustrated because I hate seeing my tank like this. I've basically had my skimmer off for a month, the huge water changes are killing me, my water looks like crap, and I hate seeing my fish sick. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can try Metro by Seachem. I've dosed this as well as Prazipro in my DT with no ill effects.

If you can see the flukes on the body then I believe you are battling skin flukes vs. gill flukes. Skin flukes can be in the gills and under the scales and can take a very long time to beat. The research I found said that this species of flukes is harder to cure than the more common "gill" variety. A cleaner wrasse will help but not eradicate thebastards. When my fowlr had skin flukes the cleaner wrasse was lovin' life!
As far as beating the skin flukes, first, I did the standard treatment, which didn't work. Then I did 2 treatments every 5 back to back without skimmer, carbon or water changes...this took care of it on all fish except my butterflies and angel. Then I did 3 treatments every 5 days....the butterflies looked better but the angel was as bad as ever.

So after a month+ of treatment the tank was rather nasty and I still had flukes. I finally increased the dose by 60% and ran a 2nd dose increased dose after only 3 days. After further research I learned that Prazi can kill the eggs which incubate for 2-4 days. So far, it appears I have beat them. However, I thought I beat them with previous treatments.

Note - my tank is a fowlr with fish, snails, starfish and coraline algae. None of these were affected after the high dose treatment. I do not know what would happen to your coral so I would advise that you get all your fish out and into a cycled hospital tank for treatment and let your DT go fallow for a couple weeks. It's obviously a lot of effort but flukes will kill if left untreated, unlike other parasites that can be suppressed by the fish.

Good luck!

P.S. You asked about he skin flukes looking opaque and wondered if it was because they were dying. Mine looked the same way. Perhaps that is the bottom part of the fluke that has died while the top part is alive and protected under the scales, I don't know. Gil flukes are not visible without a magnifying glass, until they die. Skin flukes will be visible.
