John Hersey High School 90 Gallon Reef Tank

u should take a look at a site called donorschoose.org....im not sure if you are limited to what you can ask for but people ask for all sorts of school related items on there and receive donations towards the purchase of whatever they are asking for....ex. field trips cameras microscopes...etc.....good luck with your project...i set up a 30 g nuvo for my 3rd graders and they love it....what a great learning tool..our tank is still progressing

Ryan, thanks for the heads up! Whatever I can't get through corporate donations, I'll put up over there!

I have a bunch of stuff that i am not using and would love to give it to Hersey - I am going through it all tonight and was going to Free-Craigslist it, but you should give it a whirl.

I'll PM you.

Phil, I just replied to your PM. The stuff you have will work PERFECTLY with what I'm trying to set up for the school! :D

And for everyone following this build, tonight I drilled the tank. The bottom didn't LOOK tempered when I tried the polaroid trick, but I didn't want to risk it. So, the back of the tank is now drilled with a 1" drain left of center and two 3/4" returns, one along each corner.

A few dedicated friends of mine are meeting me at school bright and early at 7:00 AM, and we get to walk this thing up a flight of stairs. Fun! Until then, here's what everything looks like.

As it sits!

So I just priced out what I'll need to get a surge tank up and running, and **** are diamond coated drill bits expensive! Does anyone have the bits for either 1.5" or 2" holes? I need to drill three holes between the two bits. Thanks! :D

And, of course, like the tank on Facebook!

Very nice looking tank. The kids have to be very excited as are all of us!!!

Good luck with everything and I will be following along.

I forgot, but this reminded me! Just checked and the largest i have is 48mm... Apparently that will only do 1" sch80. You need some big **** bits for 1-1/2" or 2"...

Yup; $20 a bit... Ah well! For education, I'll find a way!

Thanks to Phil (Chicagophil) for all of the stuff tonight! Hersey just came up with 2 RO Units (one will be donated to Palatine High School), countless heaters, a ton of filters, a bunch of powerheads, some great test kits, boxes of cleaning supplies, and, of course, a 6' Tall 50 Gallon Octagon tank. So there's that. :D

Hey Ben,
I have an aqua lifter pump that you can have. It's never been used. I also have a TLF 550 reactor that you can have. It could easily hold both GFO and carbon if you want to consider running them together instead of separately inline.

Marylin, that'd be great! I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it out to you, but if you're able to swing back around Arlingon Heights, I can set you up with some more frags. :D
