My 50 Cadlights Cube Artisan 2 Build

DD

"Rambo"
Greetings,

Welcome to the new build. I initially was going to upgrade slowly over the summer by buying all the components one at a time until fall. I was leaning towards setting up a 65 reef ready but ended up coming across a used 50 cadlights cube. So I bought it lol!

The only problem initially was that I had already purchased a sump with the intention of using it on a 65 gallon. The sump would have fit in the stand, or I would have built a stand for it. I was leaning more towards building a stand because I don't really trust manufactured ones. The sump ended up being too long to fit within the cadlights stand so I'm selling that off.

That left me with the problem of not having a sump to fit. I worked with Will and came up with some measurements. He sent me over a drawing and we decided to move forward. The sump he created fits perfectly within the stand now. I'll get some pics of it up as soon as I have a little time to mess around with the tank. This is my second sump from Will, and let me tell you, it freaking AWESOME!!! Will I can't thank you enough!

The only sad part of this build for me was taking down my planted 46 gallon bowfront aquarium. I've had fish of some sort since I was about 5 years old so FW will always have a place in my heart lol! The planted tank was something that I was never really able to pull off in the past. I finally succeeded a few years ago. Well anyways.....

Equipment List:

Tank: 50 Cadlights cube artisan 2 tank, stand, and light trees.

Lighting: Evergrow IT 2040 from the new group buy

Sump: Custom Luttman's Sump. Specific measurements and photos to come

Return pump: Eheim 1260

Skimmer: SCA 301. Just received it the other day. Otherwise known as the Ebay skimmer. I have one on my other tank and it works really well.

ATO: Avast Marine ATO. I am running this on my other tank. I like it because it doesn't rely on float switches and you can plug it right into a port on the apex head unit.

Water movement: MP40WES already have it.

Heater: Finnex 200 watt titanium digital heater. I know it's kind of pointless to have a controllable heater with an apex, but I like dual redundancy.

Dosing: Haven't really decided which route I'll go just yet.

Controller: Full Apex with lab grade ph probe.

Substrate: I'll probably go with one 20lbs bag of a coarser sand. I still can't bring myself to go barebottom on my tank. I am partial to wrasses so this is a necessity. I really like the aesthetics of sand as well. I'm just not gonna go with a lot.

Rock: 50lbs of Marco Rocks.

Top: I have the glass tops that come with the Cadlights, but I don't really care for glass tops. They tend to suppress PH so I ordered some mesh from Goat585.

Other equipment like test kits, refrectometer, etc. have already been in use for my other two reefs.

Here is a quick photo I took of the tank in place.

Next steps are to give it a really good cleaning. As you can see, it's pretty gross right now.

Once I clean it up, I need to shim under the front of the tank since it's not perfectly level.

I also need to remount the light bars for my fixture. I was going to do it now, but I may just wait until the fixture comes in.

Then on to plumbing it. Once that's done, I'll fill it with tap water and let it run for a couple days to make sure there aren't any leaks. Once it passes the leak test, I'll drain the tap water out, put rock and sand in, then start the process of making RODI and mixing salt.

Should be fun, I'll have more photos as I get into the process a bit. I'll do my best to photograph every step in order to help others who may have never set up a tank before, or are getting the same or a similar tank. I always hate researching threads on a tank I'm putting up and not seeing pics.

After all,

:worthless:

Looks great man! Cant wait till u get this sucker going.. I'll be tagging along

Thanks bro! I'm wanting to just throw it all together right now lol!

I just don't want to repeat the process I went through on my other tank. I'm gonna get everything exactly the way I want it. I'm trying to avoid the, "Man I wish I would've done XYZ", before it's all set up.

I'm going to give it a cleaning later today and I'll try to get some better pics up of the tank itself, the stand with the sump in it, as well as the sump by itself.

I'm so excited lol!

It looks like its going to be an awesome build , keep the pictures coming.

Thanks Steve. I managed to clean up the front panel today after work. Scraping algae isn't all that fun lol!

I'm hoping I'll have some time after work tomorrow and work on the rest. Once I clean it up I'll get some better pics up.

Just a quick update:

I finished cleaning up the inside of the tank as best I could. There was a small piece of the overflow that was cracked so I used some frag glue and fixed it up. I also was able to get the light bars up as well. I'm tempted to throw a couple of additional brackets to hold it at the bottom because I don't like how flimsy it is now. Also shimmed the tank as it was pitching away from the wall, although it wasn't too bad.

I am going to need a return line bulkhead, hopefully I can get that soon so that I can fill this thing with water and leak test it. I figured there's no sense in doing plumbing until I have the return bulkhead.

Here is a quick pic of the sump. As you can hopefully see in the pic, the left side is the refugium, center is drain and skimmer, and right side will be the return.

Here's the same pic above with a general idea of how I'm going to plumb it. I'm still debating on whether or not I should use a shut off valve on the drain line. Earlier in chat Chris brought up a good point as to why one should use a shutoff on a drain. He said that if you want to shut down the tank and have the water full then you would need to shut off the drain line. I'm more so leaning towards including one, especially since I've bought one already :p

Also in the photo, anywhere I have it labeled as 3/4" or 1 1/2", basically all unions and shutoff valves, they are all going to be installed with reducer bushings since my return line is going to be 1/2" and the drain 1".

Two additional comments related to the photo below: the first is that you will undoubtedly see a piece of pvc sitting on the sump. This is to hold a giant filter sock. Will came up with this idea and I love it!! The second comment is please excuse the crappy drawing skills I've exhibited, I didn't feel like busting out my bamboo tablet. I'm a lefty so drawing with a mouse kind of sucks.

Quick update:

Bulkheads have been installed. Rock has been ordered and is expected to arrive this Saturday. Also put in a BRS order which is due to arrive Friday.

Heater came in today. Ended up getting the finnex 200 watt titanium heater with digital controller. The controller is kind of pointless since I'll be using an apex to control it, but I've always liked redundancy on stuff.

Most of the plumbing stuff has been purchased. The only reason I say most is because I'll undoubtedly be making another trip or two once I start running the PVC lol!

I'm hoping to have the plumbing done before the weekend so that I can leak test it all. I'll probably run it for two days or so just to be sure.

I will get pics up once I start doing the plumbing. I also grabbed the window screen kit and will be making a screen top for the tank. I'll post picks of that as well.

Dam bro ur getting this ball rolling fast!! By the time you know it this tank will have water in it... Everything is looking good bro.. Looking forward to the weeks to come on the shape up of ur tank

Thanks bro! It bothers me seeing an empty tank lol! It's going to take me a while to get it filled with RODI and salt after the leak test is done. But I think I'll manage to speed up that process a bit.

Hopefully the group buy light will come in really quick. That's one of the main things I need. The apex is going to be a big expense too. I won't need it right away, but I don't want to go too long without it.

Quick update:

50lbs of Marco Rocks came in today. Aside from there being way more rocks than I anticipated, I'm glad that I'll have much to choose from for my scape.

Now on to the plumbing. Throughout the week I made roughly three trips to menards. Well I made three trips today as well lol!

First shot is the drain line fully installed.

Next shot is of the drain line, along with the return line plumbed in. I'm probably going to install a union on the feed line for the refugium on the left hand side of the sump. I literally finished this at 1:30am so I got tired and just wanted to get it set for a leak test.

The final shot is of the plumbing I did in the overflow. Matt at Sho Tank helped me out a couple weeks back with the 1" bulkhead and cut some pipe to get me started with the durso. The durso is not glued into the overflow box just in case I want to remove and clean it. The return line is glued in as I don't think I'll ever be needing to remove it. If I do, I'll be removing the bulkhead as well which is fine. It's kind of hard to see but I did my best to get a shot of it.

I'll fill the tank and sump up with water and run a leak test for a couple days to make sure everything is water tight. My only concern as far as leaks go are the bulkheads. I'm pretty sure they won't leak but you never know.

I'll try to get a video up of the tank running during the leak test.

Next steps are to drain the tank, begin making RODI, mix salt, work on the scape, add sand once scape is completed, and then add the saltwater to the tank.

I have yet to purchase an apex and ATO but I think I'll order it as soon as I'm ready to add fish.

Well, there's good new and bad news.......

Good news is that there are zero leaks on both the drain and return. Everything is A+

Bad news is that the mag 5 return sounds like there's a marble caught in the impeller. I've disassembled it several times, put it back together, plugged it in, cycled the power several times and it's not going away. Not sure if I want to try a new impeller because I really have no clue on how old the pump itself is.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Looking good so far. I would replace the impeller bc it would be the easiest/cheapest fix.

Thanks Vic!

I think I figured out what the problem is. The impeller goes into the pump housing itself, then the opposite end of the impeller looks like there should be a piece that's attached to the cover plate. This piece is nonexistent. I'll have to find a place where they sell the cover plates or the piece that's supposed to fit in there.

I've never owned a mag pump before so I'm only guessing.

Edit: just ordered the cover plate assembly from Amazon, it should arrive tomorrow. Gotta love Prime membership!!

Your build is coming along nicely. Well done.

Good luck with the pump.

Thanks Jeff, I'm hoping the part I ordered solves the problem. It should be coming tomorrow at some point. Once it does I'm going to let everything run 24 hours to make sure there aren't any leaks that spring up. I doubt there will be but you never know.

Just a quick update:

I received the new cover plate for the mag 5 return pump. That seemed to do the trick! I'm hearing a tiny bit a noise, but nowhere near what it was. I went ahead and ordered a new impeller too. I don't have any idea on the age of this pump, so I figured with a new cover plate and impeller, it would be like new. Not sure when that'll arrive but for the time being, it's working great.

I'll continue to leak test it till this evening, and then I'll drain the tank and sump, dry it out, and get ready to begin assembling everything. I still need to pick up a full apex and avast ATO. Not 100% necessary at this stage, but I would rather get it now.

I'm hoping that towards the end of the week I can begin making RODI and mixing salt. I'll have all day Saturday to begin the scape. Should be interesting lol!

I got my Apex from Reefgeek. I called them on the phone and negotiated with them for awhile until I got the price I wanted. Wait until next week with the 4th of July sales and you might be able to find a great deal on one. I just use a float valve in my sump, attached to a 5 gallon jug on the shelf for my ATO (this would require you to have a shelf you wanted to put this on, mine is in the laundry room). GL glad things are coming along.

Cool thanks Jon! I'll wait until next week before I purchase an Apex. I'll check with Reefgeek first and see what they can do.

are u done yet? Dammit hurry up!

Lol! I'm trying! Hopefully the tank will be salty by the end of the weekend. The light should be coming by either next week or the following.

As soon as you get this tank running, you can tear apart the smaller one and catch that wrasse!

Extra motivation? Given.
