didn't think I should since the water goes under into where the pump is

anything that is in that are can get into the pump area

what if you put a grate on the pump intake and gutter guard/eggcrate in between the fuge and return area

Actually, that PIF is courtesy of DJE! He PIF'd it to me, so I PIF'd it to you Glad you have a little room for him to grow out. That white spot will heal in no time.
