My 90g Oceanic TECH build

Maybe I missed this in your thread, but what are you doing with the 3 mag 9.5s? Are two for the returns and the third to feed the fuge or something? Also do you like the Mag 9.5? Are they pretty quiet?

Yeah, the very first post of my thread goes into details hehe. I purchased a package deal on the equipment from a guy on CL. He had the 3 mags running and I just couldn't justify spending another 200+ on a larger external pump. (at the time anyways) He had them plumbed internal, I moved them external, which probably shaves 5+ degrees off my temps. I wish I had just got the larger pump, but hey, it all works. It might be a PITA come 6 months down the road when I need to pull them all and clean them.

Anyway, the first pump is my return. The second is my skimmer EV-180 aqua-C. The third is basically just extra flow, because it rarely comes on, but it feeds the chiller. The tank has a few built-in holes in the rear euro-bracing and I have a bulk head for the chiller; however, I have been thinking about removing the "T" from the main return and just have the chiller feed the left and the return feed the right and get more direct flow from my returns. I aim my returns out towards the side glass, since I have 2 MP40's making waves, and having both 9.5's pushing out, i would eliminate any dead spots, I pretty much have none atm, just a small little area on both sides.

The mags are nice, I don't really have much to compare them too, I do know that if you go external, you should avoid hard plumbing them and use the rigid hose with PVC fittings to eliminate hummmmm. If I didn't have the hummmmm of 3x 9.5's, I wouldn't even know my tank is right behind me... It's really not that bad, but I also do not have doors yet!

Dave! That frag is awesome. Soon as the wife lets me buy more stuff :) I will buy us a frag! Looking forward to Saturday as well, as is my 6 year old daughter (NEMO!)

Very nice progress!

Fish look beautiful in QT and DT. One word of advice you probably already know - take the macroalgae out of the DT before introducing the purple tang. Unless you want the tang to have a nice salad!

Lol, yeah, I will probably move it to my Nuvo or back to the fuge haha. We'll see if he shows an interest ;) it's actually taking off well in my fuge, so hopefully he does like it and I can give him a snack here and there. Again, thanks for the compliments Bryan. Still waiting on Bryman Sticks!!!! :)

Hey Doug what kind of macro algae is that? Me wants some lol

Jeff,

It is Dragon's Breath macro. I got a mixed pack of macros on ebay when I was cycling the system. It has taken off for me and everything I've read says its non-invasive, so I likey haha. It glows under actinics, freakin' awesome.

The tank is looking great, and I see a few pieces from me looking thrilled in there! Everything happy, though? :)

Yep Ben, all is well, I just moved pieces up from the sandbed yesterday. They all seem happy so far! Nice PE on all of them, now just to see them color up ;) I tried to take some macro shots of your specific SPS and I just don't have the lens for it, so I will keep trying lol.

Glad they're happy for you! :D

what kind of sand are you using in your tank? I currently have the argalive sand in my biocube and am worried it would blow around to much in the larger tank with the increased water movement I will have. Do you have sandstorms in your tank?

It's sugar grain size and there is one spot next to my overflow on the left side where the sand storm whirls up and drops, I just moved rock away from it and now its like a cool little storm event lol, the sand just lifts up in a cyclone and drops back down. I removed my chiller and have a mag 9.5 driving each return now, so I get a TON of flow back into the tank, I positioned them towards the outside glass about 1/4" of the way down. I then have the MP40's set to short pulse wave at about mid strength and have about a 1" wave and a nice rocking / swaying motion in the tank, I absolutely love it. No dead spots and besides that one corner where it floats up and down, I have zero issues with my sand.

I have snails and a goby that keep the sand filtered, so it stays very clean and after a few days you get sand bars or drifts built up, which looks kick a$$ and very natural. If I start getting too thin and can see the tank bottom in one area, I switch to lagoon mode and it basically changes the entire sand bed. Few days later, I put my waves back on. I love sugar grain size and will never switch! You can add some snail shells or rubble pieces into it and it helps create a very natural scape with the sand shifting around.

Ok, sooooo... July 23rd was the day I removed my fish and have been fallow since. This has been difficult, but I promised myself to let it go for 8 weeks.... Well that time frame is coinciding with my move to Michigan, so I guess the fish will get to see their old home around the first of October. I had a notion that I would sell my 90 and upgrade but I've decided to hang on to it and start building up the new tank over the next year. So let's just hope the move goes well. I will finally get to set up my fish room, which I am very excited about.

My tank has been on cruise control and I have been adding SPS here and there, thanks to Ben and Hung Vo, I have some nice livestock starting to grow out. I also picked up a few pieces from Reefwise and I also returned the purple tang and grabbed a tiny Kole tang. I picked up a 57g RR Oceanic Illuminati (rimless) which will house my pair of snowflake onyx (I got the fishies from Dave), got the tank and stand for a very good price; however, it did have a small chip on one of the corners! But, the tank has never seen water, so I can deal with the minor aesthetic blemish.

So I guess in a few days when I have more time and the tank lights are on, I will get some updated photos! I'm going to be doing some changes when i move and I will finally get that single pump to run the system! Photos coming soon, take care all!

Few pics, my apologies for the white balance problems, still trying to figure out this camera and LEDs... Looks like a neon tank in the photos, the natural colors are sooo much better, but this is as close as I can get for now... I put my fish back in today also, 7.5 weeks was long enough for me lol...
