new house big reef tank ideas and suggestions PLEASE COME IN!!

Congrats! I'm going to just put this out there... I have a bad back. :) I do have access to furniture straps, the kind two guys use to haul refrigerators. Neighbor has a big one, I used it to move my 8' tank, one guy one each end and others supporting the sides, I ended up not renting suction cups because I wasn't sure they'd help much lifting they way we were. What are you doing for a stand, DIY or buying one?

thanks i hear the straps are a good way to go.... i will be building a custom stand... the tank will be 20% in wall from the start of the overflows back...... making the wall its on 3d and view-able from the sides

ordered some equipment today so i have the basics to get it going

540dc simplicity skimmer
2-mp40qd
vectra m1 return pump
500 watt finnex hmx heater
300 watt finnex hmx heater

still need to decide on the sump who manufactures nice custom sumps? that arent stupid $ i was thinking of contacting midwest custom aquariums in minnesota they do alot of acrylic... or buying the bashsea 48" at premium aquatics

No idea on the sump manuf. I made mine out of an old 125 a friend let me have free due to it having a broken brace. Had some glass baffles cut at a local glass shop and siliconed them in.

Bashsea has some nice sumps

got a boat load of equipment ordered and changed the size of the tank from 300 to 250 for shear fear of setup costs lol and evap rates.... should be here 1-13-17 and most of the equipment has landed i will be starting a build thread shortly once i close on the house

Dropped some $$$$$ today with anarchy. Lol he's a bad influence.
All I need are lights now.

4 hydra 26
2 hydra 52 and 2 hydra 26
2 radion gen 4 pro with two t5"s
4 radion xr15g4
Or 3 radion G4 non pro
I could also do 6 hydra 26 but that may be a tad much
Or 6 kessil 360we
Or two ap700
Ahhhhh decisions

Any suggestions. Never really liked radions but that new optic lens has me intrigued

The 4 big brown boxes contain 250 lbs of Marco rocks. That's all I will ever use. There's zero phos leech

I would do 3 g4s with t5 seeing it's a 6ft tanks and you are basically looking at 24x24 per each radion just my opinion :suspense:

May want to talk to an Hvac person...an exhaust fan pushing air out of the room may require enough 'make up air' to avoid pulling co2 from the furnace into the room. Not sure about it, but better to ask than find out the hard way.

This is important to research. I have a "tiny" (compared to what you are doing) in-wall 125g in my basement office. The tank and sump are next to my furnace and I am concerned about long term issues so I put removable panels around the sump.

I considered putting an exhaust fan above the tank but I've read that if you pull out too much air there is a danger of CO2 being pulled into the room from the furnace and water heater. I instead run a dehumidifier when needed.

i will ask a professional but since the house is newer i believe it draws most of the makeup air from rooms it is heating and cooling via returns.... its not a older home

The issue is that an additional exhaust fan in the basement could throw off the balance and suck too much air out of the basement, causing a back draft through the furnace and water heater. When I researched it on almost every DIY/HVAC forum they said "don't do it."

10/4 i would rather use a dehumidifier anyway... but I will ask the question maybe you can bring outside air in...

There is a device called an air exchanger that does just that.

The issue with dehumidifiers is the electricity cost and heat produced. The issue with the heat exchanger is the upfront cost (not cheap). With your huge build the exchanger is probably worth looking into.

Multiple options here...an HVAC person with experience on the topic will be better than us reefers ;-p

Note: Most "big" kitchen hoods can also create this same kind of issue. I learned about it because we do not have a wall between our kitchen and family room (which has a fireplace and myreeftank).

I've had both the Kessils and Radions. They are both excellent lights. The Radions are much more flexible with more options. This can also be a downside if you don't know what you are doing. The Kessils are simpler to use.

I'm using the Kessils because I found their mounting system substantially better over an open top tank. This might not be a consideration for you with an inwall

I bought a two bulb t5 tonight with the BRS 10x points deal that happened today. I also think I'm gonna go with 4 hydra 26hd to start and see where that gets me. I will be making a rack so I can specifically mount them almost anywhere. I feel they make more power than the kessil since I can allocate un used power to different channels. Plus the iPhone control is great and free...

Why not run CC bulbs and t5s? Dudes tank looked awesome under them and the coverage seemed to work nicely. I'm thinking about going this route.

Ps need to find a dwarf lion like he had. That thing was amazing

Have you checked out the t247 LEDS? I would think they would have less shadowing with or without the T5s. Although I'm a T5 guy.. I'd definitely do them!

I'd rather have a light that doesn't allow me to play with spectrum and storms haha. I don't trust myself to know what spectrum is best and with all the misinformation out there.. I'll leave that to the engineers designing these things.
