New Rock, New Critters!!!

I found a hitchhiker crab in my acro the other day, I also picked that up from the swap.. From what I've been reading, that guy you have is a nasty. His pincers are tack sharp on the end, and serrated. He's a predator, armed with tools to hunt moving objects.

i think that might be a plain ole emerald crab. Those spoon shaped claw tips are a pretty good indicator that it is probably relatively reef safe, though emeralds get mixed reviews. And, since crabs are pretty dangerous, I'd wait for someone else to agree with me before turning him loose. I had good success with emeralds helping with algae problems.

are you ever anywhere northbrook? I have a home for bad guys.

I honestly don't go up that way much....atleast not anytime soon, but if you come to the city you can have him...He's in my nano in a rock but I'm sure I can get him out of there if I take the rock out of water for about 1-2hrs and then put it back in the water.

meh, I'm not that passionate about rescuing convicts. If you suspend the rock over a buck he'll probably jump out prety quick. Someone with a mantis would probably love him as well. Is it black or green. I AM noticing bands around the legs now which are not emerald-like.

LOL I understand I'm not passionate about Convicts either but I just thought right now I might just keep him in my nano with some rocks and some sand and just make a Crab home for him. I think that would look cool on my desk so I might just do that. I will have to get some non holy rock so he won't go hiding away and it won't look like a dead tank.

I'll update later with pics!!! After I get home and get my 36G together, I'll then set him up.

I vote for that! You could even get a critter keep with a little tiny pump. A few pellets will keep him plenty happy.

I've got three different species of mantis shrimp! If you don't want it I'm sure my big 5-6" peacock mantis would enjoy your bad crabs!

I'll let you know I think I'm going to make him a nice little home on my desk in my 4G Rimless Nano just some sand maybe a Coral or 2 and a rock which hopefully has no holes in it and so that way he can just come and walk around and stuff so I can see him.

But I'll let you know.

BTW how hard is it to keep the Peacock Mantis? I heard they break even the tanks glass.

only specimens of 5"+ have the force to do so and even then the occurrence is close to actually unheard of regardless of the strong reputation. Get a 40g breeder, put plexi glass on the bottom. rocks, rock rubble and NO LIGHTING
Pristine water conditions as well.

Really I kinda wish they were banned or outlawed to import. As out of all the species they are the least suitable for a reef tank.

I have the same crab in my reef and he is suppose to be a bad guy but mine lives in a rock covered in polyps and does not bother them. He is hell on the algae though. It only comes out at night to graze. Test him in your pico and see.
