Hey I'm Ryan,

I am new to the aquarium hobby and was in attendance for the Chicago Aqua Experience where I just purchased a 150 gallon reef ready tank. I joined this community to look for advice and to also inquire if anyone does at home consultations for setting up filtration like a sump.

Thanks!

welcome to CR Ryan, glad to have you aboard. It'll help to know a little about what you are looking to achieve with your sump. Are you looking to run a FOWLR, softie coral or hard coral tank? What type of fish and how many are you looking to keep? These are some of the questions we'll need to know to understand what filtration needs will be needed and be able to give solid advice.

Welcome +1 to what Josh said... There are many ways to set up your filtration system as well. When I had my 90 I had a sump and the drain going through a media sock. I had the skimmer in the first chamber. The second chamber I had the fuge with said live rock, sand and cheato. In the last chamber I and a GFO media reactor and return pump.

Thank you all for the responses!

I was actually considering freshwater as i have heard saltwater is more difficult, especially for someone just starting. I found the tank online for $150 so figured it was a decent deal. I still have to build a stand which I'll try doing tomorrow.

I know it is not as common to run a sump on freshwater but I like the idea of a fluidized sump. I know the easiest thing to do is throw a canister or two on it, but wanted to learn the more about sumps or any other method of filtration.

Figured I would spend more for filtration than the tank itself.

Honestly I think saltwater is way easier than freshwater. As long as you take your time set everything up correctly and not putting your darn hands in the tank you could have yourself a very nice tank.
