OT: An attempt to steal a baby...

Shocking but not surprising. The much smaller local red tail hawks nest by me yearly. We get to watch the little ones practice on squirrels, rabbits, birds, and the neighbors chickens. One year I watched in awe as one swooped our 40lb basset mix.

Oh my goodness!! I saw one of the falcons downtown tear a pigeon apart. It was awesome!!

Yes it is and when a hawk hits a bird traveling in the opposite direction, it's like a feather bomb goes off as both birds collide.

There's some Native Folklore about a giant "thunderbird" that used to fly up and down the Illinois River System, steal the natives, and eat them. See the links above for a great read.
