Tangency

I have a two year old mixed reef aquarium and would like to remove some live rock. The main reason I am considering a drastic 'solution' is because I am currently struggling with shaded areas, competing corals, and tissue recession because of direct flow. I hope to be able to move colonies closer to the sand bed allowing corals space to grow protected from direct flow.
I have a few questions, am in need of some guidance, and I am hoping some of the more experienced reefers can help me out.
1. Is this a dumb idea tinkering with an established tank for the purpose of making more room?
2. What is the risk of loosing colonies and/ or fish?
3. Is completely altering flow patterns by moving pump heads another option?
4. Thoughts? Opinions?
Thank you for your help.
