Removing Established Rock

Tangency

New member
I have a two year old mixed reef aquarium and would like to remove some live rock. The main reason I am considering a drastic 'solution' is because I am currently struggling with shaded areas, competing corals, and tissue recession because of direct flow. I hope to be able to move colonies closer to the sand bed allowing corals space to grow protected from direct flow.

I have a few questions, am in need of some guidance, and I am hoping some of the more experienced reefers can help me out.

1. Is this a dumb idea tinkering with an established tank for the purpose of making more room?
2. What is the risk of loosing colonies and/ or fish?
3. Is completely altering flow patterns by moving pump heads another option?
4. Thoughts? Opinions?

Thank you for your help.

One thing!!! Do a WC afterwards once done.. Use a filter sock also to help..

Try to avoid mixing the sand or moving the bottom base

I have seen your tank .. I don't think it's possible to take rock out without breaking those awesome colonies

Why not move powerheads around and selecting from corals that do ok in partially shaded areas ??

If you do remove rock, remember you are loosing part of your filtration, so remove it slowly, don't take out 50% of your rock overnight and expect everything to be the same. Either take it out slowly, or increase your WC Schedule as your tank catches up to the new demand.

you got to be super careful you dont wake a hornets nest doing this massive water change and like said above filter sock

i just recently moved out over half of my rock. i just took down what i could coral wise off the rocks and took the rock out. i had a lot of coral in my tank. you will be fine. i run a filter sock anyway. just turn off your flow so sand sinks to the bottom when u lift the rock out. im looking for rock too. so let me know if your selling any good luck.

I took all rocks out and removed sand with a net while all fish are in the tank. water was so messed up worms all over the place nitrate sky rocket. all coz I did hypo with main tank and had no extra tank...all fish survived and also 5week hypo. I am very stupid:blink:.
