Rock's 120

Thanks everyone there really are no secrets, satiable parameters, not over feeding , good lighting , calcium reactor, nothing more then that really

Ok need some opinions,so the last couple weeks some of my corals have been getting white/Brunt looking tips just a few pieces toward the top I haven't had any alk spikes the only thing that has change was I replaced 2 old bulbs with 2 new, I rotate my bulb changes so not to shock the tank, all the high end pieces look great just a couple of no namers are hurting , I know this has been said before not everything can be happy but it has for almost 2 years so that's why I ? What's happening. What I'm doing now for a corrective action is nothing as of now because I don't know what's wrong yet , I feel I need to do something but don't want to make things worse , one more thing that has changed is a fresh bottle of co2 when purchased was claimed to be food grade if not could that cause my issue?

All the beautiful growth you have may be increasing your nutrient need...and burnt tips could be an indicator of that.

I reacted late and lost a bunch. I'm now dosing NaNO3 weekly to kept NO3 above 0.

Not sure this is your issue, but it is worth taking a look at your NO3~

If I remember correctly you have a LOT of T5's over that 120 right? I thought I remembered you have the ATI 10 bulb PM. Replacing those two bulbs with 2 new bulbs may just be a sudden shock of increased light exposure that your coral weren't accustomed to.

I do have a 10 bulb but have been running only 8 bulbs during the day and the other 2 dusk to dawn, you may be right but thought for sure 2 bulbs would have not been that much of a big deal and the par jump between 50-75 with the 2 bulbs

I do add sodium nitrate and and phos to the tank now with a light pink color 3-5 on the nitrate test , the be been doing that for a while now.

I wouldn't expect two bulb changes to be anything significant either, but if everything else has been stable for a long period of time and that's the only recent change it seems like a logical source of the problem. Where are these pieces situated in regards to flow? You have MP40's correct? Have you cleaned them recently? I know sometimes when I'm lazy with cleaning the wet sides some of my SPS right in front of the MP40's can get upset after a cleaning because of the noticeable increase in the flow.

Very good point on the 40s I have 3 now and moved them all to the back of the tank blowing towards the front , that makes sense all the water flow has change a lot , the pieces that are in the worst shape are under or near by the power heads , so what do I do or try to fix that keep flow lower and let coral acclimate just like lighting

That's what I'd do. Maybe try slowing them down and then slowly ramping back up as they settle in.

Ya it's one of those things often forgotten about. I've lost a couple pieces to that before. Especially if you normally run your vortechs high. It's crazy how much of an impact algae can have on the flow output.

Hey everyone not much changed but looking for some input from anyone that knows someone or owns one themselves, I have these 2 skimmers that I'm on the fence about

And this one

Give me your thoughts
Thanks

Where's the specs? The air draw (lph) matters for the tank size and load...

Based on what I can see, I like the SC1456:
1) The accessibility of nozzle (part where the air is pulled into the pump). This matters to me, because it is the part that directly impacts the efficiency of the skimmer...anyone dosing will get calcium build up that has to be scrapped out every 2 weeks or it will reduce the air volume pulled into the pump. The Elite 200-SSS looks like the shole thing has to be disassembled to clean the nozzle.
2) Drain from the cup. I can't see one on the Elite 200-SSS...and if that's the case, it would be a deal killer for me. I use an Avast Davy Jones Skimmate locker that avoids overflowing skim into the sump, and connects with my Apex to turn off the skimmer and send me a TXT when full.
3) This one is more of a feeling that would need to be proved out...I can't tell the dimensions, but the cone shape of the SC1456 is up above the chamber, vs the Elite which looks like the cone/taper is right on the pump output. The SC1456 also looks to have a larger chamber (more air to water contact) and the cone does what it needs to do right before the cup....but this comes back to the air draw lph.

Anywhose, that's my 2cents, good luck!

So, it looks like the RO Elite is a "bigger skimmer"....800 to 1500lph! And a big $ difference.

Looks like the SC1660 is more apples to apples for the "oversize"...or the Elite 150SSS for the "right sized".

For the money you are willing to spend, you might want to consider the Aquamaxx CO-2 (720lph @22w) for $380 or if looking to oversize, the CO-3 (1020lph@27w) for $450. Full disclosure...I'm a satisfied CO-1 owner :)

Thank you for all the info, I'll have to look into the aquamax line.

I just upgraded recently from a Vertex Alpha 170 to the Elite 220. I can't comment on the other skimmer but the Elite has been great and flawless, I actually forget it's down there.

And to answer the above question about the drain, it does have one, but also comes with a micro switch in the lid to shut it off if you choose to not use the drain.

Not sure if you had seen this or not, but one of the site's sponsors has a 15% off skimmer sale ending tonight.

I don't see either of the skimmers you listed in their sale, but they do have the Aquamaxx ConeS Q-2 (a beast w/ 1500 L/hr @22W) for $300 after discount!

Notice the Q version has the pump under the chamber, but maintains super easy nozzle access for cleaning the calcium build up. And their "bubble plate" just above the pump outlet improves the bubble flow for foam fractioning.

Guess I'm being a bit of a fan-boy, but that's a great price for a great skimmer~

From the looks of the deltec i didn't see the bubble plate diffuser but a video showed otherwise massive micro bubbles carrying protein. But
The elite octo houses the new style open pump upside down needle propeller that also seen in videos creates massive amounts of bubbles
