Rockscaping ???

Ok so I am going to start rockscaping my 65 soon and I have some questions and I'll take any advice available. I've seen people lean rock against the back glass but I thought that was a no no? I'm not very creative what's a shape that's more interesting than a single peak? Any general thoughts that might help would be great. Thanks.

Depends on the kind of rock you are working with. I managed to make 4 large individual pillars in my 180, you could try doing the same but maybe 2 pillars to create a focal point in the middle as a trench between the pillars. I'd definitely avoid leaning all your rock on the back wall. A few pieces that need to for stability is ok, but room for flow behind the rocks is more important. You have plenty of depth with that 18" footprint. I'd be happy to help you do a little scaping depending when you need the help. But yea, a single wall of liverock is kinda boring long term.

Drilling holes and using plastic dowels works great I hear. I actually need to change mine up also because 170 lb wall is boring.

Here's my first rough draft. Please let me know what you all think. Thoughts concerns advice?

I think it looks good. I like the open feel about it,should be no problem with flow. How did you bond them together?

As of right now they are not bonded together I'm still changing things here and there. The eggcrate serves two primary functions: 1. It helps keep the base rocks from slipping and sliding on the bottom glass there by protecting against scratches. 2. If a rock should fall it protects the glass by absorbing and distributing the impact over a larger area. The look I want is kind of like pillars but connected so there is ample swimming room for fish good flow and nice ledges nooks and flat surfaces for coral placement.

I'd like the 2nd setup better if you added 1 more rock on the left stack (up against the overflow) to even out each side. Otherwise, it looks good.

The eggcrate seems like a good idea too!

I think if you take the top right 2 pieces and move them left to go up the overflow more, it would make a nice looking separation in the structure.

Thanks I will be looking at your suggestions and taking pictures and posting them soon.

Looks good! I started building a pillar as well. I just had some extra rock sitting in a bin and wanted to see what I could put together. PVC is 3/4" held in place by (4) 1" legs.
