Salinity ?

Skimping LOL i must have missed that part, did'nt know you could Skimp when doing Saltwater .. FYI when i bought the refracto from the LFS solution was never mentioned or it would be in the equiptment room with the other 3 pick up loads of stuff .carry on

Nice reply....

Every instruction manual I've seen on handheld refractometers all say to calibrate with calibration fluid.

Carry on....

Back On topic, i don't think your calibrating is the problem. Search for leeks and post a of your skimate

People are trying to help you out here. It is rather well known that you need to use calibration solution, not RO water, to calibrate your refractometer. This has been demonstrated several times, the reasonings of which are listed in a very informative thread on here as well. Unfortunately the myth persists that you can calibrate using RO water - the instructions that came with my refractometer even said as much! They were wrong, however. This is easily demonstrated by getting some solution that is specifically made to be an exact 35ppt, and just testing it. For some meters it works out to be close, for others it's as far off as 1-2 points or more. Plus, refractometer calibration solution is cheap - under $5.. If nothing else it's worth the peace of mind. Although, as has been mentioned, it's your tank, you can used and do what you want.

Regardless, I hope you find the source of the disappearing salinity soon.

peace of mind is great :-) and just back from the LFS and there refractor tested the Salinity same as mine 1.023 so i'll order out some calibration solution and sounds like Joe is spot on and i have to research a lil further .
thanks again

Bob I apologize if I came off in a way that seemed snobby or demeaning. That was not my intention. Just trying to help. All I was trying to say is we spend so much time energy and money on our systems I'd hate to see you have a catastrophic issue because you weren't using $5 calibration fluid. Again I am sorry. I hope you find the source of your salinity issue.

Gotta wonder though, when was the last time they calibrated theirs, and what with? Maybe they don't calibrate, maybe they use RO...

It's pretty common, I would use rodi though, not to. Calibration fluid is a solid investment though.

What color skimmate are you pulling out? Is it dark and smelly or more like green tea? What size tank and how much water are you adding per day? Are you using ato or adding manually?

Dark and STINKY !
