SPS Polyp Extension Questions

Walt... you have ApolloReef LEDs too... How long have you had them? How has the growth been for you with them?

It's not all about PAR. I went to a PAR kicking phoenix bulb to a lower PAR EVC bulb and my corals responded much better. I would recommend running carbon 24/7. I run 1 cup of ROX through a reactor and change it out every 3-4 weeks. I have also seen that my corals like Reef Crest mode the best out of all the modes, and actually close up on NTM when I put it on during my water changes. Although we can't pinpoint the actual issue my suggestions would be:
  • Try something else other than LED
  • Change to a more random flow mode
  • Run carbon 24/7

One of these may work, or none of them will, it would just be trail and error now.

So can random flow cause better PE and make that huge of a difference? I'm not running any sort of wavemaker right now... just koralias.

Apollo leds were a mistake,i had 1 solar blast and it just made my corals look good at first but then they all were retracted and would not look right,i switched to some units from gus and everything is back on track, great growth and PE. I think it's your lights.

Thanks Shawn. I spoke to Gus earlier today and am probably going that way myself. Can you tell me a little about your tank and which lights you got from Gus? Simply put I just can't go to T-5 or MH and make it work. Either I will not get the depth penetration or I will create a sauna in which I would have to work all day long in. Perhaps I could get a good tan... Let's not go there.... If you have some pictures you can share....that would be cool too.

Thanks again for your response.

Yes, variable, random, strong flow does wonders for SPS

I agree with this.

I have Maxpect Mazarra LEDS and I love them.I've had them since the end of January but it hasn't been until recently that I have had them finely tuned and my tank adjusted to them. PE has been amazing with them and the new flow and they are only at 75% now. I want to bump it up, but my softies wouldn't like that much and I'm currently going through a change with my setup. At 75% now, everything in the tank is happy.

We spoke today,I think its the lights. I will help out as much as I can,its a very frustrating problem to go thru.

Hm... Ok. Got any recommendations on a cheap wavemaker that would do the wonders, till i can put some more money aside for a mp40? I purchased a used mp40 a few months ago... but never got around to using it and ended up selling it to fund a motorcycle... lol.

So I thought I would post a quick update. I have had a couple of LED's from Gus hanging over the tank now for about a week. I love the color of these lights....with red and green LEDs. While I still do not have a lot of polyp extension....the colors seem to be improving.

Here is a pic from this morning....the colors are really popping nicely under these lights.

The plan is to switch lights to the Neptune series light so as to improve the coverage a bit, to do some dawn through dusk dimming...

A huge shout out and compliments to Gus and Prestige-LED. Thanks for your help and generosity. I am starting to enjoy my tank again. Now I need to figure out what to do with the ApolloLED I have. It is a good light...for me though the red and green LEDs are essential.

Yeah... I am running the MP40 in reefcrest mode....as opposed to nutrient transport. i get a lot of flow. Not sure I want to add to it.... I actually dial it back a bit....again toe vary the flow.

Dansreef: How long have you been running that MP40? Nutreint and or Reef crest?

I just bought a mp40w to test poidog and other's suggestion on random flow... And it's been day 3 and i can see more polyp extention out of my sps. not where i'd like them to be, but it's looking better every day...
