Tank transfer questions

hmmm i would have done it that way if there are no flatworms .. but dosing the existing tank with fw exit scares me cause the die off might affect the corals.:(

In my opinion, you are FAR more likely to kill your coral by splitting tanks, setting up temporary unstable QT tanks, etc. than just dosing the display with flatworm exit and adding an air stone for extra oxygen. Good luck.

Tin, like Ted has stated, you're better off treating the main tank now, before you even make the transfer, and that's what I'd do. I'm sure most of us have used the flat worm exit with no issues, including myself, and I can't recall anyone having complications or die offs. Don't make it too complicated by making all these unnecessary steps. Running carbon and doing an extra water change will guarantee that you won't have a spike from the die off, and you won't lose corals. I treated flat worms in a weeks time, and haven't had issues since. :-)

I agree with everyone about the "added risk" to your corals from that approach. Chalices are finicky enough as it is...

With all the $$$ corals you've got, I can see why you'd be nervous about dosing your current tank.

If it were me, I'd reconsider how important reusing the existing love rock really is...it can't be worth more than a couple of % of your coral investment. Setup the new tank with fresh rock, cycle it, and then transfer corals w/CoralRX dip in between.

thanks everyone.

after all thoughts i think im gonna treat the main tank as is with the exception of really expensive ones. ill just set up a separate tank for them with live rock .. (only the chalices i think)

and leave them separately running until the new one is upto speed (may be a month ) and then treat them and put them in main tank.

Just treated with flatworm exit. Moved the main expensive ones to a 10 gallon with live rock though.

15 mins and counting and I see flatworms everywhere floating and what seems to me like dissolving ?? I should have done this long back

As per the tank with nicer stuff It's got no fish or cuc and has enough flow and running a kessil, so essentially a frag tank so they should be fine in there for a while. I'll treat it later and then put them in the main tank ..
Thanks again everyone.

Well all went well and everything seems to be happy and polyppy except for the clementines which didn't open after the treatment :(

I just did a tank transfer and I put everything In a 40 with 1/2 the rock from my 93 then the other 1/2 in the new tank with new live sand and a lot of dead rock from Marco rocks. It's been 4 weeks and I still won't add any sps all other corals I've been moving look great though. I wouldn't add sps or chalices to quick to the new setup because I'm thinking nutrients will be high from rock and flatworms dying then again im pretty cautious

Looks like you did the right thing with the 10g setup hope it all works out good

Second treatment also went well and no losses except for a couple of acros which I think may be cause of moving and light issues

As with the new tank, almost there

with only rock from 29 gallon with a water volume of 22 gallons or so to a 50+ gallons of fresh salt water i dont think they will be any nutrient issues.

im going to clean the little bit of algae on rocks in a fresh batch of saltwater so some nutrients if any will be lost there .. .

im doing about a gallon of water change everyday on 10 gallon tank and everything looked nice and colorful (after the first dose of FWE on monday) yea 10 gallon is a good idea :) ill add the corals in there to the main tank thru out the week slowly acclimating them to new tank again.

all said and done one more week of wait time before the new tank completely is polulated :marchmellow:
