tiles for frags

Ever consider marble tiles? White marble is only calcuim and safe at the ph of our tanks. Coral, zoas and others all grow well on the marble covering my tank bottom.

Hummm! I like the idea.. Can you provide any links on this information.

It will help ;)

That's what I have, the marble white tiles. Zoas are growing over it pretty fast. Going to put some sps on there soon. I actually have a bunch of big 4" tiles sitting in my sump for the calcium.

It never even occurred to me. You've used it?

I use it now. My barebottom has a tile floor :)

I went with black marble, but did so with risk of trace metals and other unknown goodies slowly leaching into the water. But with straight white you have a very small amount of foreign material to concern yourself with.

I don't have a link, but did quite a bit of reading on RC before I used it. After finding 100% marble tile at homedepot I washed it real well in RODI, then let it soak ion RODI for over 2 weeks. I monitored ALK, CA, PH and everything I could test for to look for changes. I saw none, so I lined the bottom of my tank with it. The thing to watch for is oil or other nasties the company used to polish the marble. This should be visable during the 2 week soak.

Everything; coraline, softies, zoas, sps, grow well on it. The tile is so flat and smooth I can simply pop or scrap the peices off and glue them to frag plugs.

From a lot of reading, including stuff from Randy Holmes there is very little chance of any of marble tile adding any calcium to the water column. The checmial properties of the CA in the tile does not disolve at the pH of our reef tanks. Other forms of CA can. I'd have to search again on RC to find links to the info.

Of course mileage will vary will each user and reef tank. I spent a lot of time researching and felt comfortable tiling my BB. I have seen no adverse affects but there were many users warnings of why try the unproven.

I have 2x2 tiles and all my palys/zoas are on them. Have used them for months with no ill effects... I just went to menards. They had a sheet of them on sale and the sheet was like 2 dollars for like 16 or something. lol.

example:

Those WOW's are on ur standard 1" frag plugs i think. Whatever the most common size is... Those utter chaos are also on those tiles. I'm also trying to do the zoa garden/carpet thing you're saying
