Tip and tricks the make things easier

Plus 1 to keep g the hands out ta the tank

+2

That was the number one tip given to me. In other words: just leave the tank alone. Do your maintenance, but leave corals in one spot. Once a coral is acclimated to a location, it begins to settle in. I have several sps frags that I moved around a lot. It took roughly 2 months for it to start encrusting and putting on growth.

Invest in a good refractometer.

Quality RO/DI unit.

Don't dose anything you haven't tested for. After testing and then dosing, test again.

Never be afraid to ask questions.

your rocks collect detritus as good as anything else in your tank, it will just sit in there and rot. take a baster/small pump, and blast the rocks, try and get in every nook and cranny. you'll be amazed at all the filth that comes out the first time you do it. do it all the time and its one less rotting pile in your tank

Get an Vortech Pump.. Problem solved...lol

gravel vac into a micron bag in your sump to remove all dirt and unwanteds without changing any water

I did this yesterday for the first time. I cannot believe I had never thought of this. Worked like a charm! I just doubled up some filter socks and ran the gravel vac hose through them. So easy and the filter sock was loaded with crap when I was done. Thank you so much for this seemingly obvious tip!

This is an old thread, but I thought I'd bump it because there is some good info here. This is where I learned the gravel vac into the sump trick that I now use weekly (thank you Matt @ Sho Tank).

I'll add one more trick/tip: When mounting SPS to your live rock, lean it slightly towards the back of the tank. This allows light to hit the front side that you see, rather than the back. It doesn't help with growth or anything, it just makes it more pleasant to look at because you see the colored up side.

Let's hear your tricks and tips.....

This is obvious, but invest in a good clean up crew. Can't say enough for how much crabs, shrimp, snails, and even bristleworms do to keep your tank clean.

Always epoxy or super glue your rocks! Have at least 2 -3 different methods of testing the temp.
"Ultra Pulsing Xenias" aren't expensive, no matter what people/lfs tells you. They grows like weeds and most reefers give them out for free.
If you have tangs, buy a magnet feeding clip. This will allows you to avoid having to dip your dirty hands into the water trying to mount the suction cup clip everyday.
Get a wave maker, either vortex if you have the dough or jebao wp works just as well.
Lastly, don't forget to sit/stand infront of your tank and admire it like a kid in a candy store. That should be one of the reason you're in reefing. Not just to do maintenance everyday!
