I should probably qualify my timeframe statement a little. There are a few exceptions. My tank has been up for years. At one point I went through a pretty bad crash and from frustration ran Fish only with live rock for a couple years. My halide bulbs were just as old. There were two corals that lived through the crash that were not growing and brown. They were probably the size of a baseball. When I finally got over the grief of losing all my coral I started putting LED's in the tank. (about 8 months ago) A friend and fellow reefer was tearing down his tank and gave me a few small baseball size corals to move to mine. I continued to add LED's and frags to the tank. Fast forward to today.

OK so here we go..

So I will go over the upper floor and the tank.

The tank has been set up about 7 years. It is 10 feet long by 3 feet wide by 30 inches high. I had it made by Miracles in Canada. The tank is made from Starfire glass and has a center overflow. All the filtration is in the basement under the tank in a room that is build for the filtration system. I had an engineering firm come out and the floor under the tank is reinforced with an I beam and 2 posts underneath it. The rock inside the tank is Marco rock. I am running a deep sand bed. Originally the tank had ten 400W halides. (yes every 4-6 months I had to buy 14 new bulbs) I used luminarc mini reflectors and reeflux bulbs with coravue ballasts. There were four T5 actinics for supplementation. About 4300 watts running for each light cycle. Because of the heat I was running a 1hp chiller a lot. I have since replaced all the halides and T5's with LED's. I am running Cree Royal Blue's with XPG 7.5K whites. I supplement UV and Red. I am using Carclo wide optics. For flow I have 4 of the large tunze's in the Tunze rocks. I used to have a wave box but I don't feel like it was worth the effort and it has been removed. On the back wall of the tank I have 3-4 other random flow pumps I am playing with to increase the flow more. Everything is steady and there is no wave motion or anything like that.

Now for the lower level.

My sump is a 100 gallon Rubbermaid. I have live rock in the sump and that's it. No refugium or anything like that. I am running a Super Reef Octopus XP-8000 External skimmer. I am running a Reef Octopus Bio Churn 170R Recirculating Bio Pellet reactor. I have a dual media reactor from bulk reef. Both chambers are running GFO. I do not run carbon because it was messing with my angelfish. I have three 55 gallon plastic food grade drums. The first one makes RODI water with the best cartridge available. This freshwater tank is a horizontal tank and on a stand above the other two 55 gallon tanks. The first lower 55 gallon tank is regularly stirring Kalkwasser solution and used for top off. The top off us driven by a litermeter 3 and matched to my evaporation rate. The other 55 gallon drum is used for water changes. Every week 55 gallons is drained from the system. Then the contents of this 55 gallon tank is moved into the sump. The fresh water from the above tank is dropped, Reef Crystals salt is added and it is set to stir for a week. Then the process is repeated weekly. The pump in the filter room is about 6000 GPH. It moves the water to the tank on the floor above through 1.5 inch PVC. There is also a large heater in the sump and I use the apex control for the pumps and the lights.

What's coming

My calcium reactor has not been running in years. I am working on getting that set back up. We are dosing about 2 cups of dow flake and 2 cups of baking soda a week right now. I am also re plumbing the return from the main pump with spears valves. I am building a manifold to feed the other equipment in the sump so I dont need the small pumps anymore.

I am sure I forgot stuff but that pretty much covers it. Any questions on what I wrote let me know and I am happy to try and answer them

Ted

P.S. I do have to give credit here to Tikireefer. He has been helping me with tank maintenance and without his help this tank would not be where it is today...

wow ! 8 months of growth thats amazing! sorry i dont have anything to trade but it would be fun to see a build thread on this tank ! good job and good luck finding trades

There was a build thread on RC a while back. I will see if I can find it.

What's your secret? That kinda growth in 8 months from frags is insanely unrealistically mind blowing and awesome. Your tank is now under paranormal investigation by the government classified as the hyperbolic time chamber. lol

All I can say is I was skeptical in the beginning and started slow. I can't even begin to say how pleasantly surprised I was with these LED's.

Also from the responses I received a lot of people do not have frags of SPS to trade. I will post a pay it forward thread tomorrow. I am going to have a lot of frags from at least 3-4 of these corals. I am going to post which frags I will give away and plan to have 2 windows for pick up's. Saturday morning and Sunday evening. Then once I get my frag tank running I will start selling the others.
