48 hours and MUST bring dead fish back with water sample...

I agree with Dre.

Perhaps the only add may be a picture of the fish going through acclimation. With the usage of phone cameras... something like this would be useful to weed out scammers. It would be a great habit for all of us and a way to share what new goodies people get!!!! :becky:

Shaun, you may want to include a 2 day option on your poll.

If the store is QTing the fish prior to sale, then I could see a guarantee. If not, then there should not be a guarantee.

Seven days with a video of the acclimation process, picture of the tank with that day's newspaper in the shot and a water sample.

Theres not even alot of online stores that offer guarantee. That will be hard to ask for. I dont think any of us offers guarantees to our fish once it leaves our tanks.
It would be nice if they offered a guarantee like liveaquaria. MCF replaced my fish that died, which was nice, but they closed

This doesn't make sense. So if a store sits on an un-QT'd fish and sells it fast there shouldn't be a guarantee? Yet if the LFS goes thru the trouble of QT'ing a fish they should offer guarantee on top?

That's how you lose money if you're a LFS!!

Quite the opposite kevin. No QT= guarantee QT= no guarantee.

I agree. IMO, it all depends on the price we are willing to pay for a fish. If the fish is offered very cheap compared to other LFS & Online orders, then the risk is on the buyer.

I feel LFS should have options: $x for a fish that was not QT'd with 1 day guarantee
And $x + 10% for 1 Week QT & 3 Days Guarantee
And $x + 15% for 10 Days QT & 4 days Guarantee....something along these lines.

This is all about managing risk to maintain customers & still able to stay in Business.

Dan, unfortunately I can't edit the post to add 2 Days. Mods, if you can please add a 2 Day option for pooling.

Actually, what you are saying makes zero sense.

How can a fish store that sells a fish quickly guarantee that fish? They haven't probably even had a chance to feed the fish multiple times let alone make sure it's healthy. Now you buy that fish and it dies within two days and you expect them to refund or replace a fish that they know nothing about healthwise? All that risk should be on the buyer.

Now if they have QT'd that same fish, know that it's eating and healthy, I think that the store is going to feel a lot better about promising the quality of that fish.

Way back in the day at the lfs I worked at we did a 5 day guarantee on freshwater, 24 hours on saltwater fish, and no guarantee on inverts. You had to bring the fish in, with the receipt, along with a separate water sample. The thing that used to be amusing is watching people bring in Chicago tap water as their sample for the freshwater fish and freshly made saltwater for the saltwater fish. Like I didn't know the difference lol.

Out of curiosity, How do you tell the difference between freshly made salt water versus perfect water from Aquarium. It's a great trick, I'm just curious to know.

It may sound weird but freshly made saltwater doesn't have the smell of the ocean. Plus there would be some traces of nitrates. Even in the most pristine tanks, there would at least be 1ppm of nitrate.

Edit: Back in the mid to late nineties no one had gfo and water changes were suggested at once a month. Sps was nowhere to be found either. Our wholesaler used to get stock directly from Fiji, marshal islands, tonga, Hawaii, etc. and they never had any sps. Only lps and softies. Heck even zoas and palys weren't available.

From a business point of view, there's just no way I can imagine providing a guarantee for livestock. There's way too many variables.

From the customer's perspective, it would be ideal to have a guarantee. However, imagine what some of these fish go through before they even end up in an aquarium, which is probably why a lot of LFS don't offer a guarantee

I could imagine it being something like this:

Initial catch > thrown into a holding tank > bagged > shipped overseas > thrown into wholesaler tank > bagged > shipped to LFS > thrown into LFS tank > customer wants / bagged > acclimated > thrown into tank

well i couldnt comment on the other thread cause it was closed. but really we all bought expensive fish and they died before . some places will warranty a fish some dont . i dont expect a warranty its all a risk in this hobby . i got free frags one time and ended up with aefw do i tell the guy hey wtf the frags u gave me werent good. now i understand u pay for fish and it sucks when they dont make it specially when u remove and get rid of other fish to make room then have a empty tank when it dies but that was a choice on u not lfs . i cant see getting bent out of shape about buying one fish from there haveing it die and saying im never going back. if thats how it works im screwed and would have no place to shop. arron i met u u seemed like good guy and im sorry for u lose of fish but i dont understand why u as angry as u r u did win a nice ro system from there so u trip there couldnt of been that bad. again guys we all know the risks and i sit and stare at fish for hours before i buy and ask to see it eat even then not a sure thing . most places they really qt i mean really qt not just hold em for a day or two then say they qt'd cost alot more for the fish and should come with a warranty but i cant afford those places so cheaper prices more risk is ok with me thats reason for my qt and i understand when i purchase that that fish hasnt even gotten use to that tank yet let alone being shoved into another tank. so for me if lower prices mean no warranty its fine with me if i want a warranty i will buy from divers den and pay out my butt for it cause really they the only ones imo that qt correctly any way . not knocking othe lfs but ive gotten sick fish from all of em and i mean all of em take it how u want it not trying to make people mad just stateing how i feel

Dude, the thread was closed. If you can't tell why I feel the way I do by reading the posts, I don't know what to tell you. I voted for 7 days and that's fine, I am willing to pay a little more if need be.
