What Salt works for you

Good Morning Chicago reefers.
I have a question what salt are you guys using to keep your reefs thriving? I ask because it’s time for me to do a water change and I have been using Red Sea Coral Pro and I love it. I would like to try Aquaforest Probiotic salt. So my next question is would it make a huge difference by trying this salt for one simple water change? I know my coral Vendor uses it and I like the price however you get what you pay for. Please give me your thoughts and salts that you are using. Thanks for reading and tanking the time to respond.

I use reef crystals. Not sure you'd be able to tell if you like a salt after 1 water change. I have seen a lot of people starting to switch to probiotic salt. I've even thrown the idea around myself. Once I finish off this bucket I may switch. enzo1028 did you switch to probiotic?

I was using reef crystals and switched to Fritz a few months ago. I didn't notice any issues with my parameters at all and the salt mixes very clean. I don't have that clay like residue in my mixing station that RC left behind

I have only used Reef Crystals and have no complaints. It is true that there is a residue left behind in my mixing buckets, but that has never been an issue for me.

I didn't really like that residue. My container flexes so that residue would crack/flake and get into my new salt water occasionally

Yeah I normally order Red Sea Coral Pro from Amazon but the size I order they can't get it to me until July 6-11. I can’t wait that long for a water change. I am very adamant about my water changes. I don’t want to hurt anything by using something else to get me by for this one water change. I wanted to do a WC on this Friday but because they can’t get me the 55 gallon mix, I will have to get the 175 gallon mix and wait until Saturday for delivery and hope they deliver early so I can get my water change done. I like to generally do it late Friday night or very early Saturday so I can have the rest of my day for other things like going for my weekly coral purchase. But we will see.

I have never dosed because of water changes. So correct me if I am wrong. If I went with another salt until Amazon had my preferred size (less money) as long as I dosed and get my parameters to where if they are off they normally are I am ok?

Many dose to get their parameters to what they want or what's recommended. BTW, I use Reef Crystals but I don't get the residue for some reason. :)

i Dose to keep my levels constant :)

if you have an sps dominant tank or too many sps .. alk usage would be more ..

this monster named alk is a different kind than other parameters like Calcium/ magnesium and other trace elements ..
different being - for other elements corals just neeed to have them and as long as they have more than they desire they are good to go .. where as ALK ... corals need to have a stable value for this and any major change in its level either way would hurt corals ..sps more than other types of corals.

so lets say its 9dkh after your water change and over a course of week it dropped to 6 dkh and you do a water change and bring it back to 9 .. thats 3dkh to some sps is like drinking a sip of chilled beer between sips of your hot morning cofee if it makes sense :)

i use aquaforest for my sps tank - mixes at 8 alk and i keep alk at that level with dosing .. i still do weekly water changes but to replenish trace elements not the major elements.

and use red sea coral pro with my lps/chalice tank - because it has more magnesium than aquaforest which is what chalices and lps like .. but mixes at an alk of 11 dkh which is a bit too high for sps.

yep thats right .. nothing is easy in this hobby haha

This was an excellent breakdown. I have only LPS because I figure SPS is to hard to keep and I have only been in the hobby 1 years 4 months. One day I will try some SPS
but for now LPS dominated tank is what I have.

and how big ?

if its just lps .. need for dosing is very very minimal .. make sure magnesium is dosed timely and all will thrive .. oh do water changes

For me I like fritz salt. The parameters are where I like it and one time a box had parameters that were completely off and they made it right. They treat their customers right.

I've also used Red Sea coral pro, reef crystal regular io and they were fine. I just like fritz better because it mixes great and parameters are what I like

Are you SPS dominate or mixed?
