What Salt works for you

1 cup per 5 gallon ? What type of reef you have Mixed, SPS dominate or LPS? I thought IO was 0.5 cup per gallon

I just saw your post. I use Red Sea Coral Pro too. I had the same problem last year when my LFS ran out, so I bought a small Reef crystals to use for a few weeks. I had no issues. Using a different salt for one or two partial water changes will have minimal effect. Just watch salinity with the new mix. Dose cal and alk as needed.

Opps just saw the date, your already done.

That is exactly what I am doing. Rc for two water changes. I have had to dose magnisium and alk but other than than that coral looking really good

Ok peeps. I have decided to try Fritz RPM with my new 150 Gallon build. I will use this salt from here on in. I love Red Sea Coral Pro but the Alk mixes a tad high and I want to try my hand at SPS coral since I have a couple Hydra 52 HD :) I will keep you guys posted on this salt. IT not to bad in price either 70 bucks for a 200 gallon mix.

I just finished with a bucket of Salinity been using it for a while but my most recent bucket is leaving something in the mixing container, going to switch to Fritz to see

I have heard so many good things about Fritz so I decided to use it in my 150 build. I have no plans to change because I have read so many reviews on its consistency and it mixes fast and the best thing is that it don't cost much in comparison to RSCP

I use reef crystal. it looks like the price is going up up at Dr. FS do to them starting their own salt.
Anyone use Live Aquaria salt?

I am currently using Fritz RPM with my 150 gallon. it does not cost as much as Red Sea Coral Pro. I can definitely say the Instant Ocean makes a great salt. Reef Crystals seems to be a decent salt.
I just get mixed reviews. I have not used it long enough to determine if the negative reviews were true. I can say there was a residue left behind after mixing but that could have been precipitation which now that I think about it I am almost sure. I have also read that RC has some inconsistencies in parameters. Maybe we should all do a test Use Reef Crystals for 3 months and share the results.
I can also say I do love the fact that you can get a 200 gallon mix for like 50 bucks.

I did not even know they had a salt. I am quite sure it will be some type of probiotic mix or something. I will go to their site and read some more on this. So I am guessing since there are a lot of salt mixes out there it is safe to say that most salts contain basic elements found in the ocean. some may contain more trace elements than others such as Calcium, Mag, and maybe mix with a higher or lower alkalinity. Would this be true?

I Use reef crystals as well. I have been using for years with great results. Not to mention the cost of it compared to other salts, I just don't see myself buying another salt.

I was using RC, Oceanic, Red Sea, and almost every salt mix out there, testing, adding, etc, then about 2 years ago started reading Farley's articles, and when Red Sea +Kalk had my calcium over 600 (max set value for Hanna checker), I reluctantly put $39/200gal Instant Ocean in my tank. Calcium gradually came down to 500ppm and alk ~9 while adding Kalk. This is the most recent Farley article I could find on his Triton test using IO +Kalk is http://www.reefedition.com/my-triton-testing-results-by-randy-holmes-farley/ - Mario at Aquatica in Tinley Park sells IO at $39, which seems to match all the on-line stores. Certainly a cheap salt, but, it seems to keep things balanced.

I use regular IO and never had an issue. Many of the others have really high Alk and stuff so I stay away from those.

i Dose to keep my levels constant :)

if you have an sps dominant tank or too many sps .. alk usage would be more ..

this monster named alk is a different kind than other parameters like Calcium/ magnesium and other trace elements ..
different being - for other elements corals just neeed to have them and as long as they have more than they desire they are good to go .. where as ALK ... corals need to have a stable value for this and any major change in its level either way would hurt corals ..sps more than other types of corals.

so lets say its 9dkh after your water change and over a course of week it dropped to 6 dkh and you do a water change and bring it back to 9 .. thats 3dkh to some sps is like drinking a sip of chilled beer between sips of your hot morning cofee if it makes sense :)

i use aquaforest for my sps tank - mixes at 8 alk and i keep alk at that level with dosing .. i still do weekly water changes but to replenish trace elements not the major elements.

and use red sea coral pro with my lps/chalice tank - because it has more magnesium than aquaforest which is what chalices and lps like .. but mixes at an alk of 11 dkh which is a bit too high for sps.

yep thats right .. nothing is easy in this hobby haha

You use aquaforest reef salt? Have you had any issues? I’ve heard complaints about it being inconsistent. Bulk reef has a nice sale going and was thinking about picking some up

petsolutions.com has a code for 15% off "THANKS17". So I order 2 boxes of Instant Ocean Salt for $73.03/ $36.54 per box.
