What size is this bulkhead? (and other plumbing ?)

I'd like to order a threaded fitting that will turn it down 90 (or just something I can go to PVC with).

Also, for the return, should there be another bulkhead or should i just use a U shaped return? This used tank has just the one hole. I've only seen one sump set-up in person and I didn't pay enough attention to the actual plumbing. Can anyone direct me to schmatics of the various designs. I'd love to see simple diagrams of the various choices of sump/fuge/baffle/closed loop configurations.

Is this basically right?

(Please excuse that I only have MS Paint at work)

Just to clarify, that is threading that I am measuring, so it's the inside diameter of something, right?

Yeah. It's actually the smaller hole down inside which is probably too deep for your calipers to measure. The inside diameter of where you measured should be around 1.315 inches which is the OD of 1 in. pvc.

Thanks, so a 1" PFT elbow should go on it and 1"pvc is my drain. What about the return, that should be 3/4 then, right? And how does that traditionally go into the actual DT?

So this is not going well. This fitting is not 1 inch or 1.25 or 1.5 inches in SCH40 PVC. I went to the Ace Hardware on 41 and the plumbing guy was a complete jerk to me once I said the word aquarium.(He made me mad enough to call the manager after I walked out of there) (they do have 18gal grey roughnecks for 11.49 though). Any other suggestions? The jerk said "all aquarium stuff is special order and not pvc", but I know that isn't right. Is this metric or something? I haven't taken the fitting off to measure the actual hole, but maybe I just need to get a new one? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

It's a SCH80 fitting then.Go to premiumaquatics site and order there.

thanks Gus. I'm certainly not a plumber, but I have finished 2 basements with bathrooms (one with a steam generator) by myself and I sort of expected the plumbing to be the easiest part of all of this. Will it be better for me in the long run if I trade this bulkhead out for something like standard 1 inch? Or is there a fitting that will translate between the two? I don't want to have to rely on special order for everything if I can avoid it.

Just in case any other rookies come across this:
The fitting is a standard 3/4 inch ABS slip/slip bulkhead fitting. Standard 3/4 pvc slips right in it. I was hung up thinking something would go on the outside diameter threading, but that is just for the bulkkhead nut. I was surprised that the bulkhead would be slip fitting because it limits removal in the future. I now have what I need and a little more knowledge. Special thanks to Chuck at BRS for the education. thanks to everyone here as well. Definitely helped me zero in on it.
