WHAT THE HELL? What is this thing?

Ok... so I just had prob the weirdest experience ever.

It's night and all the lights have been off for about an hour now... I finished playing some call of duty and was about to head upstairs. I top off the water for the night (ya i know, ato coming soon) I do the usual stare at the tank for another half an hour before i remember what i was doing.

So i see this lump on a rock that usually isn't there. Pop out the flashlight and it looked like a slug... but it had like a little, flat shell on it. I've never seen such a thing so my first thought was, oh no! I have some kinda weird hitchhiker and so I grab my extened aquascaper claw thing I use to feed my nem's to try and grab it and keep it in a container to photograph it.

So i grab hold of it, and it was grabbing on pretty hard, and all of a sudden, I see the front half with the shell just detach and the bugger was quick! It went back behind the rock and the other fleshy half is STILL there moving around after 10 mins already... I don't think i cut it in half and it looks like it detached by itself... No blood or gooey crap came out of it.

What the heck was that, is it bad and should i be hunting for it?

Stomatella snail. Completely harmless unless you rip its shell off, then it nukes your tank.

JK, they are harmless, and you just tortured a poor defenseless creature.

I had a tank w/ hundreds of them. It was never a problem for me. You would only see them at night. It was like they came out of nowhere.

Oh man... ok. Thats good news. I kinda feel bad for it, but more or less grossed out at the same time. Cuz the bad half is still moving around... Hope the front half comes back and reattaches or something...
