What's the best way to kill LR?

I just did this! I put the rocks in fresh water from the tap and added bleach. I didn't measure but poured in a good cups worth per bucket. I let it sit 3 days. I then rinsed the rock in more tap water and let sit in plain tap water for a day. I then re-rinsed and let sit in a bucket of fresh tap water and added prime to neutralize the bleach. Let that sit for 3 days. I then rinsed in RO water, I used waste water, then let air dry in the sun for a couple days.

It's brand new dry rock. Let it cycle, seed with live rock/sand.

I left a bunch of LR in water in some covered Home Depot buckets... Do I throw it out or can it still be washed?

I would say skip the bleach. But thats just me. I always cook my LR just put it in some boiling water for about 10 mins and you should be good to go. Idk why but the bleach route scares me the last thing I want is for that stuff to linger around. Not probable you say? I would agree but better safe than sorry IMO. Good luck.

Never ever under any circumstance bowl live rock. That's a total noob move.

its just calcium, put a tarp over it so the birds dont die trying to eat aptasia, and you are good. be fine to reuse.

and you will learn a thing about patience. very valuable tool i learned the hard way.

+1 don't boil LR. There are numerous threads about people boiling rock and ending up in the ER. Depending on what is growing on the rock, the steam created from the boiling rock can be highly toxic to breath. I believe pufferpunk had a post about this recently but can't find it right now. If I do I'll post it.

I put mine outside for the winter last year. Gave it all a good rinsing in the spring & it's perfect! Still had good life inside, too.
