This is the truest and best post on here. Service is for the better, war is for the worst. The VA is terrible. I honestly could not believe how horrible they were and they just keep getting worse.

Choosing a technical job is also something you have to plan for when you get out. Most jobs are military specific and do not transition well to civilian roles. Technical jobs do though. Personally, I would go Air Force. I think they have much more opportunity for an easier transition and a good job in intel or computers, which is a field that we will always need.

I looked into doing the Marine officer reserve program. They loved my background and the recruiter was all excited. Told me I was a perfect candidate with the Police background, my IT background, my masters.. Never been in trouble yada yada ... Then as I was about to leave. He said. "Oh u have any tattoos"!!! Lol ummm yes my arms and back are covered.... Needless to say... They said thanks but no thanks..

Same thing with naval intelligence officer program. So I'll go back to fighting with the idiots on the street... I applaud anyone who has served. Not for everyone.

Just remember, this is a decision that will change ur life. May be for better, or worse. Talk to as many people as u can.

Yea they started cracking down on the tattoos when I was in. I knew lots of guys that slid by luckily.

It is a different Corps that is for sure. I found out that Marines aren't allowed to roll their sleeves up anymore. I was floored. Nothing was more badass then rolled up sleeves on a pair of digis.

OK my knees are shot from jumping out ta planes me left ear is almost deaf from firing my weapon with little to no help from the va PTSD was the worst I self medicated and drank because the help from the service is kill to none it took years to fix with help groups and other vets on my own. There are thing you have to weigh because once you sign that paper you are obligated to do what needs to be done. I miss the buddie that were like brothers I lost there I lived with them 24/7 pray if you join you never have to take a life its a feeling you'll never forget trust me. Still to this day my family that I didn't have then pays for it now. They help me through a lot so take a long hard look at your choice ask me today would you do it again my answer would be yes nothing feels better knowing you are the big green machine that keeps the big bad wolf at bay.

I have friends and relatives that were in the Navy, Army, Marines, etc. One of my friends was in the army and is now reserves. He came back and couldn't find a job after going to college. So he went back in and is going to be a lifer (most people retire at 40 or so).

My cousin was in a Hummer in Iraq and had a IUD go off under it and his back is all messed up. Kind of have to keep in mind what the best and worst could happen depending on what you join into. Some jobs are desk jobs and never see action.

If you do join up, good luck and hope its a safe ride for you.

Thanks everyone for all ur inputs.. So after thinking this through and asking a lot questions to some enlisted and retired navy, army vets... i decided that i'll be joining the navy... i'll be taking this month to get back inshape and prep myself for whats to come for bootcamp.. and hopefully i'll be ready.. I'll be joining to become a navy nurse core

First off thanks to everyone that has served. It's definitely not an easy life serving in the armed forces.

Jeff, I think as long as you know exactly what you want to get out of joining the service, you should be fine.

My uncle served for 32 years in the air force. Joined up when he was 18 and flew phantoms in 'Nam. Ever since I was old enough to speak he would bring me model jets, toy jets, etc. I guess you could say he was "grooming" me to follow what he did. After high school I went a different route. Had I known what I know now, I would have followed in his footsteps.

One of his sons, my cousin, joined up with the army, went into Ranger School, spent several years as a Ranger, and now I'm not sure what he does, I know he's still serving though. Haven't spoken to him in a few years.

The pay is meh, the benefits, if utilized, are fairly good. My only advice is to make 1000% sure you are going to want to serve for the next 4 years. It's not a job you can quit because you don't like it. Seeing how dedicated you've been to reef keeping, I don't think that will be a problem! Just something to consider.

I wish you luck Jeff. Let me know if you need anything.
