Zoa/paly Polyp stalk extending

Bringing this thread back to life

how do i know if i need more light or not ?

like matt mentioned its the same light and he kept everything happy, same tank and same fixture and only 2 whites .. i now have 3 whites

And some of my corals close up when whites come one .. like the fuitloops zoas .. and personally i feel like im getting a bleached look and my corals are loosing color ..

im gonna get lens this weekend but again i dont want my zoas to look bland and more light than needed would make them look bland ..

Suggestions ?

So Krishna
I think the general rule of thumb is 3-4 watts per gallon. So 24 to 32 watts on your tank. If you plan SPS you could go 5 watts per. In all cases you want to be able to dim them.

Can you post picture of your light?

Some how the stalks are getting shorter as i increase the flow in my system ..

can there be a connection between stalk extending and the flow

Yes Krishna. I typically generalize zoas and palys as medium to high flow. Lower flow typically gives bigger thinker palys and skirts where high flow results in palys that grow closer to the plug and typically shorter skirts or stringy.

Low light give darker more subdued colors where high light if acclimated correctly will improve the pattern and color. I've bought palys that eventually get better colors in high light or bleach. If the paly is red I typically aim for lower light otherwise it turns orange.

Hawaiian palys(RSM, RDPE, Ding Dangs) like to be acclimated higher over time. They will improve in color and pattern. Reverse space monsters for the most part are brownish with some purple or green. Where in high light with perfect conditions they can look beautiful. Checkout Fishbeards for sale thread.

Let's not forget about parameters. High phosphates and nitrate slows paly growth and color loss should be expected.

For the most part zs and ps will adapt and morph according to tank conditions. There is no rule of thumb, but many have known placement from other experience. Best thing to do is try to mock the placement in previous tank.

Keep in mind that this is all very general. Unless u measure par, compare spectrum and somehow figure perfect flow your not gonna have identical palys as the next even with some kind of lineage.

I have all my palys on the bottom on squares. Every single one has changed since tank downgrade. I play chess to try to figure flow, but mostly med to high. My lighting is high. Therefore some have lost color, brightened in color, and appear more metallic. They are growing like crazy right now, but I'm not satisfied with color. They should stabilize and be beautiful with time.
You want to get rid of those stalks. IMO increase flow.

Cant thank you enough bud, you have always been helpful

this explains a lot of issues im having with my tank, thanks to you ill take care of them now ..
