Logan 12 featured 55 gallon mixed reef

Great tank! How are you affixing the frags on the side of the glass? Magnets? I'm going to start looking around for some magnets to make magnetic frags.

Yes, magnets. They are frag plugs with magnets on the inside. I buy them at bulk reef supply they are listed as MAG Disks 4pc - Oceans Wonders.

How do you get good parameter readings w/o water change on Nirate, phospate , algea issues can you tell us more about your system too ? Not to mention that the skimmer coral life is not the best in the market imo. Your information will be a great help.

Love the comment about the skimmer, get that all the time from people who buy frags from me. Agree with you it is not the best, as far as efficency goes. Here's How I look at it, all skimmers do exsactly the same thing. Some are just more efficent then others.

Nice softy tank! Tell us more about it (besides what's in the writeup of course)! Especially interested in how long you have been doing zero water changes.

I have had the tank running for around 4 or 5 years. Can not remeber when I set it up. I would say I have not done a water change for 4 years now. At one time I had two other systems set up and did not do water changes on them either.

I guess I will have to say I do very small water changes, but not offten. Do to the fack that I sell coral frags I am taking water out of the system and have to replace it eventually with new salt water to keep my salinity up. But this is a very small amount of water.

One thing that I will point out is that my degree is in Biolocigal Sciences. I am not say that reefing requires a dergee in biology or chemistry, but that only it has helped me along the way. The goal here is to maintain a system as close to the natural ecosystem as possible. I try to stray from reading books and forums, and really just do my own thing. At first I was on my own to figure out how to maintain a reef tank, as I was clueless to the fact that forums existed and all that I had was my local fish store. Through trial and error I have came up with what you see today.

I think too many reefers try to recreate what someone else is doing, what I try to tell people is look at the natural reef ecosystem. That is what you are trying to create.

I believe Small changes are key and not a stable temp.

I do not have a picture of my current frag tank, Will have to work on getting one up. But here is a picture of my 20 gallon frag tank from 2 years back. It was a seperate system from my main tank unlike the current frag tank. Once again no water changes and you don't even want to know what it had on it as far as a skimmer. LOL

Logan 12 your using T5 on your tank how often do you have to replace the bulb ? and what kind of rodi are you using? Do you also use cabon to clear the water ? My water gets a little bit green if I do not change the water. Again thanks for your info it helps a lot.

It was great talking to you today and thank you for all the information!! I can really see and understand when i see your tank!! Absolutely beautiful!!

It was great talking to you also. I am alway glade to give my advice and help a fellow reefer out.

I have been receiving a bunch of questions about my tank. I want to first say that I do not follow the rules when it comes to reefing, I try to think outside the box and a bunch of stuff I do/say may have you wondering what the heck or that makes perfect sense.
Lets first start with water parameters, I have no clue what they are. LOL I do not test my water and have not tested my water for 2 years now. I may have done a salinity check in the past year but can not say for sure. I just look at my coral and make sure everything is opened and doing well. If not I can usually fix the problem with out a water test.
More on my lights, they are T5 HO’s….. 6 of them. I may be putting way to much light into the aquarium and have seen evidence that I am most likely over doing it. As my bulbs have aged I have been seeing growth occur in some corals that I have really never grown very fast, indicating too much light. I can not seem to remember when I last changed my bulbs, from what I have wrote down, my bulbs have been running since 12/27/08. I have only did one bulb change since I have had my light which was a year after I purchased the fixed. So could be that I have only been running them for 2 year. A lot longer then suggested by many people and my LFS seems to think that they only last 7 months.
In the sump, I run carbon in a bag not a filter sock or anything. I also run a PO4 remover from seachem from time to time in the sump. We have well water here so PO4 fluctuate from time to time and I end up with some red slime. Not enough to harm any corals just enough to make it a small burden on the eyes to look at in the tank. I also run polyester in the sump to remove debris from the water. The skimmer is a coralife 125, I always double the size of the skimmer for what tank I am running.

Nice to see such a beautiful tank with unconventional husbandry and methods.

Too often, many people in this hobby get caught up in the idea that there is only one way. Or that by adding X and Y ingredients will have Z results.

I think your tank proves that every tank is different and we all have much to learn. Thanks for posting.

you've got a PM! I am working on my own softie tank and need some Tips from the pro.

Hey, my reply may be well brutal, but if you want my opinion I am going to give it to you. Not trying to tell anyone what to do, but can only share what has worked for me. Don't take any offense to what I say. I am a straight shooter no BS.

Thank you, I don't really think outside the box. Simply look at the natural reef and try and re create it.

just want to say your tank is awesome :) And whatever method ur doing is very intriguing.. I thnk that theres not a set guidelines on how to set up a reef tank.. i thnk everyone one of us takes a method from here and there and add there own and make it work.. Do u thnk your same method can be applied to a pico or nano tank

thanks
jeff

and thank you for sharing your knowledge
