Markitekt's 550g Build

Update. Got some salt from Dave at Aqua Pros. Good dude and beat internet pricing by a mile. It's awesome to support a local LFS that isn't a douche. Anyways, mixed up 225g and pumped it out the storage tank into the display. I wanted to put water in before I start the aquascape because I wanted to drop in my old live rock from my previous tank. It has been in a 100g rubbermaid for 2 years, waiting for the new tank. The sugar fine sand made the water super milky, so I dropped in a pump with a couple filter socks to try and get rid of the haze. The socks didn't do sh!t. The water was nasty until I dropped in the skimmer, which cleared it up in a few hours. I got random powerheads circulating as well. I'll finish the aquascape shortly and pour in some Seachem Stability. All this, meanwhile, our new puppy, Felix, did absolutely nothing, and took a dump and pee right in front of the tank. Hopefully he warms up to it.

I can't wait to see the end product! I would give certain parts of my anatomy to have a tank like that. Cute pup too.

Update,

I did some aquascaping and finished the stand. Still have some finishing touches left with the stand. Will add a few more rocks in the back just for bio filter purpose. The remaining rock will go into the 220g refugium. I will be working on plumbing the sump next and should have a fully running system by end of the week. I'll also be building the MH/VHO canopy soon. Can't wait to see this thing properly lit.

Hey bro! I've been out of commission lately and just saw your thread!! I'm excited to see this thing with simmers and sticks, your tanks are always a work of art ;)

Hey guys, I've got an update on my tank.

Unfortunately my tank had a nasty case of velvet and it wiped out most of my fish population. I ran the tank for 2 months fallow and started over with new fish. I setup a proper quarantine tank this time around. I've been gathering some SPS and they all seem to be doing good. The "new tank" syndrome has gone away and all nuisance algae is gone. I've got a nice bunch of cheato in the sump and it keeps the display clean. I keep it simple and the system is super steady. I'm sure that the fact it's 750g total volume helps keep it that way. Until I have enough SPS to make a dent in the calcium and alk parameters, I don't even test the water. When it's time, I have a dual chamber calcium reactor ready. I'm going to enlarge my canopy and add (2) more 72" VHO actinics along with one more MH. There are some dark spots between the MH reflectors, so I'll push them closer together and add a fourth unit.

I'm being slow and selective with my new fish acquirement. So far I have:

1 Blue Star Leopard (only survivor of the velvet outbreak)
1 Red Sea Regal Angel
1 Achilles Tang

My next purchase will most likely be a Sohal tang and a few more leopards.
