I was there this morning about 10AM it was packed with people buying stuff. I wanted to get some dry goods and maybe find few deals on corals, unfortunately there was not a single penny discount from their original prices.I was there two times last month and all prices were the same. For me it was a big disappointment, especially that I had to drive 45 min. each way. Got to say good bye to Blake and wish him good luck and I left without buying single thing. I was not happy with all the hype going about good deals because going out of business. Please share your experience, good or bad you had with. Good bye MCF,never disappointed me until today.

Awkward but I own Fish Planet in Deerfield and I too will miss MCF as they did plenty to grow the hobby in Chicaoland. I'd venture to say several stores in the area benefited from their presence. I believe we had grown into a mutually beneficial business relationship and did share many customers. I look forward to the new wholesale chapter.

That would be awesome to know that Fish Planet was reselling corals from their wholesale operation. I have always enjoyed my visits to your place on my Midwest Coral Farms runs and know you have a good eye for nice corals and fish. And very reasonable prices to the customer as well. It would be awesome if you were to join the forum as a sponsor and keep us out of area customers updated with specials, or even just new stuff coming in. I would be happy to make the long drive out for something I knew you had,and sure many others would as well!

+1 u should be a sponsor :)

Not terribly surprised. If they were shutting their doors big blowout sales would be in order, but they can absorb their retail into wholesale without taking any potential discounts on their ledgers, even if they'd make more money with a retail markup.

I came there around 10am and it was packed.. To me the sale was great.. Bought 2 cleaner shrimps and a pearly jaw fish.. Also got a good size piece of LR(free with jawfish since it was his home) and some live sand.. ... It was great seeing everyone again..

I was just there with Smitty between 10 and 12 and got some great deals, I only got a bleeding apple scoly a small acan frag and a nice zoa frag but got a great deal. The prices marked were not the prices it was 20% off the prices listed and on some items even more. Wish I would of have more cash to spend because I would of brought a lot more stuff home with me like Smitty did. I will post pics after I get everything acclimated. Thanks Blake:the20man:the hour plus drive was well worth it!!!

Yeah, all corals were 20% off, all frags $5, and all fish 25% off. I'm not sure what the discount was on dry goods, but I got 2 200 gallon boxes of IO salt for $76. Even if the prices weren't discounted, I still had a great time seeing Cat, Eric, Dan, and probably a lot of you who's names or faces I didn't know. I was the kid in the bears shirt wandering around. :)

Thanks a ton MCF, and thanks to all of the employees who were working there today; best service I've ever had!

Steve, you're definitely the best store near me. You have great pieces, great prices, and you're one of the few NICE owners I've met. :) Anyone who hasn't been to Fish Planet, do so! They're less than a block from the Deerfield bakery too. :D

Just got back and glad I made the hour drive there. First time there and wish I had gone more in there past. I don't know about the pricing/deals on the front tanks cause I'm not ready to spend higher dollar on those yet. I'm sticking with frags as of now. Got bunch of frags at $5 a piece. And also got asterea (I think) snails at .30 each, emerald crabs at $2 each I think and peppermint shrimp at 2.50 each. Good deals too me. Too bad the aren't open to public anymore.

I don't know anyone on here by face but if you were there when I was, I was the one with the 2 girls. Holding the 9 month old the whole time while my 3 year old was coloring and looking around with me.

ETR and I were there this morning around 9:45 and the place was packed. I don't think there was another parking spot left. Initially there was a bit of confusion on prices and discounts. I wish they had some guidance posted. The staff was so busy pulling stiff out of the tanks... that I did not bother them to ask the question....at first... I was looking to pick up a couple of fish I had on hold.....but passed as only one of the Antias were left... ETR also was missing a Flame Angel he had on hold and a Pearlscale B'fly was all but dead that he was looking forward to picking up. It is a shame... but there are other places to get fish... So no huge loss.... If you like small frags and LPS and Softies there were a lot available. I think the $10 frag tank....everything was $5. I bought an SPS colony of that was $60 for $35. I bought Azox Coral food for $12.... I think it is usually $19 or $20. Finally I picked up a large rock / ceramic magnetic frag rack....I think it is meant to go over an MP40.... for $65. I think it was $100-120 full price. So for me.... I think it was worth the drive. As for later today, tomorrow.. and Saturday. I would guess at the rate they were going.... that place will be bare tonight.

People we buying car loads of stuff. Rumor is some guy walked in near the open of the doors and purchased the entire lookdown tank contents.... rock, coral and fish..... "lock, stock and barrell". Must be nice.... It was good to see Reed and Blake one last time. They are good people and I hope they will continue to be active participants on this board. It was also good to see Sara.... though she was so busy checking people out....that she did not have much time to talk. Again, she has been so helpful and kind to me over the years. She is terrific and I wish her and all involved in MCF and GRS all the very best. They will be missed.

Thank you MCF! You guys helped me out a lot getting me all the stock I wanted and always provided top notch service :)

Thanks to everyone that came out today! It was great to see some familiar faces one last time. Sorry for the confusion, as you can imagine were busy from the minute the doors opened. For those that are wondering we do have $10 frags for $5, $15 chunks for $8, all corals 20% off, fish 25% off and we are looking to hook anybody out there up with T5 bulbs and drygoods as well. We want to see as much as possible go to new homes so if you are looking for something let us know and we can work something out. Pretty much everything is negotiable at this point.

Unfortunately when I was there, I asked Reed what's the deals going on he just pointed to prices on tanks. There should be a sign or something informing customers what's going on. I know it was busy and confusing, but I imagine there was enough time before opening doors to do a make shift signs. I am glad that most of you guys got good deals, but my experience was far from good today.

Hey Steve,
It's Isaac good to see you finally made it to CR! Quick question are you planning to selling some of the common dry goods that MCF had in stock. I just switched salts and now MCF is closing, the nearest place after them is Old Orchird and I don't plan to go that way.
