I have this exact tank and I like the water level high. IMO do not use the strainer unless you want water on the floor. That overflow area will get the junk surface skimmed out of the tank and the last thing you want is for it to be restricted.
The one modification I have done to all of my tanks now is to put some filter material between where the wier teeth are and your standpipe. It stops the water crashing sound and silences the overflow.
thanks Don....I have pretty much decided that I won't be installing the strainer as I really like the cover idea and I don't want to reduce flow in any way...
Since I don't want the durso tube to be higher than it already is, I will definitely look into using some type of media to reduce splash...
I noticed that for some reason DB uses a 1-1/4" durso pipe and reduces to 1" at the bulkhead...I wonder if I swap out the OEM durso for a 1" version if that would raise the water level in the overflow area and thereby reduce the splashing noise....thoughts?
