Poidog's 70g Tech Tank Build

I'm the same way. I can spend hours upon hours trying to get my rocks just right. It looks like you have a lot of shelves to place coral on. I like the way it steps up to the top.

Thanks Eric. That's what I like too about it... lost of shelves to place coral on, but I feel like there is no depth to it and it's just like a pile of rocks. The Fiji rock that BRS sent me I feel is too big for my tank. Here is another pic of it this morning with day light.

Having 2 islands is cool but may not allow you to use as much rock since there would be space in between the islands. I like the island look in long tanks. Perhaps you could try to create a cave in the center. Like a big circle. Personally, I don't think you need to change anything. I still like the rock "wall" look. I know it's old fashioned by some accounts but it's still classic.

Can you do islands with them, like what Mark aka mmreefcrazy did. his tank looks great with the SPS islands.

I do like that look, but I have a single MH, while the island look works when you have a duel MH fixture so you have a bulb over each island.

The more I look at the current rock work, the more I'm starting to like it. I think it needs some tweaks with some smaller rock pieces to help create some coves and a bit more depth. But it does look a ton better in person than in the pics. And there are a ton of placements for SPS. So I'm thinking of just ordering an additional 50 lbs of Fiji in smaller sizes to use and then send back the heavier, more boulder type, rocks I received (about 50 lbs, so I'll just be out $25 in returning 1 - 50 lbs box).

Thoughts? Anyone around me that can stop by and take a look in person?

Can't you just break up those bigger rock, I use a chisel and a hammer to break up my bigger rocks.

What's the point of buying nice rock with good structure ? (or at least that's how BRS avdertises it). I'd have a buch of rock then that looks like it was chiseled up.

So far BRS's customer service is very much lacking.

The problem is that they sent me 50% of rock that is very dense, not very pourous, and just plain bolderish. It would be very good as base rock for a larger tank. They had my tank dimensions and size requests. What's worse is that they are blaming me for what was sent.

Alright, I recived my extra 70 lbs of dry Fiji rock from BRS. It was much smaller in size and easier to work with for my tank dimensions. Lots of nooks and crannies, along with some caves and overhangs. Overall, I really like it and it only took me 2 hrs to scape!

I have it scaped, sand in, and 10 gal of water added so far.

I only had to use 30 lbs of the Tropic Eden reef flakes. I may use 10 lbs more to get some depth in more places for the blue spot. Right now it's at 1"

Finished filling the tank last night. It is now up and running and starting it's cycle. I was debating on whether to run the skimmer or not, as I read tons of conflicting reports on what to do with dry rock. Since I used dry Fiji, there is die off in these rocks (they are not the super clean mined rocks), so I decided that I'll run the skimmer to help take the excess out and O2 the water. After running it for just 8 hours I already have a good amount of snog, and the gate valve is fully open. Thoughts on running the skimmer during cycle?

I'm thinking of adding about 15 lbs of more sand. There is 30 lbs in there now... what do you think?

haha, oh Jose. He's getting a new PVC condo in the new tank... just have to go to home depot to get the parts.

Is Jose the fancy blue spot jawfish?! lol Hey quick question, when you put the PVC pipe in your tank, how did you get the jawfish to accept it? Did it know right away that it's his home? Am I giving fish too much credit? lol

He knew right away. I think he's spoiled now and will only do PVC. Just make sure you put rubble by the opening(s) otherwise they'll still spit sand all over to cover it for bed time.

So I'm starting to work on a fish stock list. Any suggestions?
So far I'm thinking:
Ocellaris Clown pair
Bluespot jawfish
McCosker's flasher wrasse
Trio of Chromis
pair of ORA blue mandarins
