Problem with my Chalice

We have a Aquaticlife 4x24 watt t5ho fixture on a an 8 hr light schedule and actinics kick on hr before and stay on hour after. Bulbs are 2-10000k an:21::21:d 2-actinics

Individual parabolic, individually contoured, or single parabolic reflector?

That's not a great amount of light but should be fine for a chalice up high.

This chalice is on the bottom. We just upgraded to this fixture from a CFL PC fixture with only 2- bulbs. This chalice thrived on the bottom of the tank with just those. This light fixture is a whole lot brighter than our last one. We have even had SPS's doing well in this tank for years with PC's.

It is likely a light acclimation issue, don't worry too much about it. Are you certain that the flesh is actually flaking off and not simply turning white? As Jake mentioned in his initial post, corals turning white, or bleaching, is common when corals are exposed to high light conditions.

I am positive that the skin is not bleached....it is gone and all info we are finding tells us the light is not the issue. The whole tank was acclimated to the light and for a week the chalice looked awesome.... It was beautiful and developing new colors... now it looks like crap. We cannot find an answer, but are going to try to dip it tonight, do another water change tomorrow, and hook up a filter to the tank just in case. Our protein skimmer tried to kill me the other day by dripping on to the power-strip, New skimmer should be here by Friday. Not sure what else to do, we are also going to retest the water tomorrow I will try to remember to write down the findings.

Have you tested for stray current since removing the faulty skimmer? Do you run a ground probe? Dipping a coral can often be more stressful than helpful. There does not seem to be any necrotic tissue in the photo you provided so I would not be so sure a dip would be useful in this case.

There is no stray current... No we don't have ground plug because we live in an old house with no grounded outlets. Dipping is our last resort and no one has produced a better idea thus far... I am not willing to lose this coral without having tried everything within my power.

My chalices have been thriving with the addition of Vitamin C. It helps rebuild collagen in their cells. If all is good with your parameters, you have nothing picking on the coral or fighting with it, you may want to start dosing.

Any scientific evidence proving that?

After the dip, it looks like it is starting to recover... too soon to tell but from yesterday to today it looks a whole lot better. I will try and get a new picture today.

That's great news! Sometimes the risk you take of stressing the specimen is worth the reward. Did you dip in CoralRx, Revive, or Lugols?

Let's keep it on topic.

It looks way better. I am carefully optimistic. It looks to be regenerating skin. Almost all of the skeleton is covered again. We dipped in a Marine Melafix solution. We also did a water change and got our new protein skimmer. I haven't been able to get an update picture because I had finals all week. I will work on it.

This is what the old protein skimmer did
