SaltyScotty's "Gonna take forever" 220g build

Looks really cool makes me regret only starting with a 55g, should have gone bigger but wasn't sure wife would go for it.

Oh wow, so far so good. You're almost done! The hardest part is patience... Almost impossible for me to be patient. waiting for the tank to cycle so you can get life into it! :a02:

I bought the bio spira and my goby same day and put them in about an hour a part. Goby is still thriving and has tank mates, two clowns, coral beauty, gbt nem, numerous herm crabs, snails, shrimp. I put the bio spira and goby in after the sand had settled and temp was good. About two days after sand went in. Nitrates, ammonia never spiked and are currently all 0. If you do go with dr rock vs live, you will want to check phosphates, I did all brs punkani dry that leached phosphates, I've been running a Gfo reactor and am at 0. I did put two pieces of lr in to get the coralline introduced. So far so good four months in. Like your set up looks good.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone, this has been a very fun project to say the least...

The waiting game continues...3 days of a water line running across the kitchen and into the family room and we're only at 2/3's...at least the sump should only take a day...

Does anyone know how many gallons a BRS 5 stage RO/DI should last? I dont know if I am seeing things, but I think the filters are already changing colors and this thing isnt even filled up yet...

Thanks!!

With water from Valpo, your sediment filter will brown pretty quick. DI maybe not as much, but I know Valpo water isn't the greatest. Just monitor TDS, and just consider replacing the filters a few months earlier than anticipated since you're making so much at once. Speaking of, my wife and I are looking to buy out there, know any good deals?? Buying next spring.

Did not get the TDS meter...hind sight is 20/20...thinking about ordering one WITH a new set of filters...

Anywho, there are a bunch of good deals in Valpo, Im kinda south of Valpo amoung the corn fields and from what I can see around me there are some good deals.

Hmmm, might have to take a look next time I'm out there for work. And definitely get a TDS meter. Well worth the investment. And get the in-line, not the stand alone. The stand alones are sooo prone to getting contaminated.

This reminds me of the 4 days and 1 1/2 boxes of salt it took to start up my 180! The fiancee was all like "aren't you worried about it overfilling?" at the end of day 1.... LOL

I had the same reaction!! Are you sure this will be ok when we go to bed...um...yeah I'm pretty sure the 75gpd system wont fill up the 220 gallon fish tank that is hooked up to the 40 gallon sump... 260ish gallons vs. 75gpd...I think we'll be ok!!!!:redface-oops-6:

It was even funnier when the next morning she asked if I turned the filter off overnight cause it didn't look full... :-/

Hey All!! This guy is back in the fight!!

First off, heart surgery went as well as to be expected. Only bump in the road was when the doc pulled my chest tubes out and collapsed a lung. That kept me in the hospital for an extra few days, but all in all I am getting much better.

Second off, the tank has been circulating for a while now. The skimmer is much quieter then when it started and the old lady and I put 160lbs of sand in it. In all honesty I dont know if I am going to add a bit more sand or not but we shall see. The 160lbs gave me an inch-inch and a half covering on the floor.

Lastly we are building our "towers" as the kids like to call them and hopefully this weekend we'll be able to get those into the tank. Thats when I'll snap a few pictures to share!

Thanks again for all the kind words and support surrounding my surgery!

Well the building of towers didnt turn out exactly like I had hoped...but we adapted to what we had and what was working and put SOMETHING together... and I thought I would share and get some feed back!

First off is the FTS of what we're starting with...

This next pic is of the side that I really like and I am more than likely going to keep for the long haul...

Lastly we have the side that Megan made an awesome curving tunnel thingy on the left side that this guy screwed up and now its a little tunnel thing that we cant see as well...fish will still be able to swim through it...but the bigger fish may not be able to...
