The very start of a 75 gallon build

I just picked up a 75 gallon rimless and will be upgrading from my 29 Biocube. I just started this hobby a few months ago and I am ready for a bigger tank. Who knows how long this tank will last before I want to go bigger :eagerness:.

I plan to take it slow with this build and not rush through it like I did with my first reef tank. I currently only have the tank and stand. The tank has an overflow and two returns. I have so many questions that I do not know where to start. I will use this thread to ask questions that I will have throughout the build. Thanks in advance for your help. I have some initial questions.

1) Should I a) paint or b) use film for the back of the tank? If paint, then what kind of paint? If film, then where do I get the film and how do I put the film on with the holes?
2) What size and type sump and pump should I get for a 75 gallon?
3) Is there a place where I can buy some sort to screen top for the tank or is it DIY? The tank is 48"x18".

I used film for the back of my tank that I picked up at Petsmart for under $10. It was doubled sided black and blue and I just used black electrical tape, so if I changed my mind I could switch it out. It has hung up for 4 years with no issues. The blue side gives the tank depth and the black side gives the back of the tank a slight mirror effect. I went with black and have been very pleased with the mirror effect.

Good luck with your build,

Jim

Film (tinned) in window section..Hardware store..I think.

30 gallon sum is the best but I don't know how to fit in that cabinet.

Order from this guy screen top goat585 then I will show you how to DIY.

First thing you should do is sell that stand and either buy/build something that is open in the middle. That is unless you want to run an external sump. I'm also personally in the paint camp for tank backs. I use Behr paint/primer in one. It goes on easily and if you ever want to take it off it comes off easy with a razor blade.

I also think it would be awesome with a nice closed loop and no powerheads/wires in the tank, but drilling the tank isn't for everyone!

Can't wait to see what you do with it!

I measured the internal width of the stand and it is about 12.5 inches. There is also a side door for sump access. I like the look of this stand.

Ooooh, I totally thought that the middle was separated by shelves, now I see that it's a decorative panel. With a side door you should be golden!

Check out Nano Sea Creations for the sump. He is local, St. Charles. He can build you a custom sump that will fit in that cabinet plus he has very reasonable prices. Maybe a sump with an attached or detached ATO reservoir at that. At 47" you have the room for it.

looks like it should turn out to be a sweet setup i look forward to watching this tank progress to a full reef in the coming months GL.:encouragement:

GREAT TANK! almost bought it from under you lol check out nano se creations for the sump... just make sure you have the skimmer picked out before hand... you should really build a stand though there are sooo many things that you can do to make life easier plus you can never have enough room. looks great though your gonna really enjoy it

I am going to stick with this stand. It was a great deal because it came with a nice looking stand. I will do my best to fit everything in there. It seems like plenty of room to me but I've only had a 29 biocube so maybe you guys are right. I measured the inside area of the stand and it's more like 42" x 15".

I run a 75 gal with china leds get great growth changed few bulbs for color only issue i have is spread because of haveing yhem in canopy. I was looking into these which r better demensions to help with the issue. They r dimmable i cintrol mine with reef keeper i find no need for built in controller but some people prefer built in . Think these will be my next lights. With few mods for color of course
Check out this item I found on eBay: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=231085376279&alt=web

I think I prefer a single module with built-in programming. This will require less wires and less clutter for a minimalistic look.
