The very start of a 75 gallon build

I'm a fan of the Reefbreeders. They have a 32 or 48 inch fixture, so you only mess with 1 controller.

Either hang it from the ceiling or make a mounting bar that attaches to the back of the stand. Take a look at my build thread to see what can be done with $3 of conduit.

So I am starting to plan the plumbing and I am not really sure what I'm doing. The tank has an overflow with two drains and two returns. The drains are 2 inches and the returns are 1 inch. The back of the cabinet has 4 holes for the plumbing. I have posted the pictures below.

This is my rough sketch of the plumbing. Is this okay or am I completely off here?

I would put a ball valve on each return pipes you can keep the flow the same to both

Is it possible to use the two bottom holes of the cabinet for the return pipes? Those two holes would be lower than my sump so my return pump would need to push the water down first and then up again.

If your overflow has two bulkheads it's most likely meant to be run " herbie" style with one full siphon restricted by a ball/gate valve and one open with a standpipe. Even if you don't run it that way, I wouldn't run them together into one drain, redundancy is always a plus in this hobby.

the most important thing that anyone has noticed and said so far.... if the pipe clogs at the Y your Fu$&ed two valves on the return will also be nice since the pipes arent symmetrical...

Good catch glen. Yeah definitely 2 separate pipes for the drain

Thanks for your inputs. I think I know a better design which will require me to drill holes in the stand. I will upload new plumbing design later today.

Ted,

I want to do the herbie style but my overflow box is too thin so I can't put a PVC fitting so that one drain is higher than the other. Unless I get a thicker overlow box.

I bet you can cut down a street elbow and fit it inside the overflow, otherwise you can use three elbows on the outside of the tank to raise the height of that drain.

I'm not sure I understand how to use 3 elbows on the outside to raise the height of the drain.

Yes, I'm still working on this build slowly, but been very busy.

I've gathered all the required equipment, rocks, and sand. I've built the screen top, put on the black film on the back of the tank, and setup my RODI unit. I have sorted out the plumbing and will do it this weekend. I will update with more pictures when things look a little more complete.

Just some photos as vucious works... Taken with my iPhone so sorry if they're not the best!

Mesh screen cover because I'm afraid fish will jump out.
