Herbie's 45g^3

Initial plumbing layout. (Only an approximation) anything look like a huge mistake?

Note cards are not water tight.

I'd move the drain line up higher and flip the drain piece itself so that it is facing downwards. Unless, of course, the tank is already drilled (and it looks to be the case). Then, it should still function all right. I'm just a durso guy. :D

Great tank, and I love the title of this thread! :D

Right now I'm planning on the drain just being the upturned elbow, but I may put in a box too.
Btw: recognize the sump? :D

Just be sure to put a screen of some sort over the drain so you dont flush nemo...

Yeah and I think I will cut teeth in it too. That piece is threaded so I should be able to adjust it up and down a little.

Annnnnnd this tells me nothing. LOL

you planning SPS, just LPS, 100s of clams?

LPS mixed with some easy SPS. "As much variety as possible" is my mission statement. :)

I am thinking LED lights now just to save on bulb changing in the future. There are several on my list.

Gotcha. T5 would work well for this type of set up too. You could squeek by with a 6 bulb, but I think you'll need an 8 bulb for coverage. The only thing I don't like about T5 for display (besides them making LPS look awesome) is that the tank looks flat. No shimmer or dimension. I think for cost effectiveness 1 Radion will work perfect for you. Gus's hybrid LED fixture may work too if it can give the front to back spread you'll need with a 24" wide... I think it will.

Nate, the build looks awsome!!! The last picture looks crazy.. Will you be going BB or SB?
still debating, but my eye definitely prefers the look of a sand bed. If I did a drebed I'd only have about 2 inches of water, so not quite that much sand.

The 45g is a great cube with nice dimensions. What kind of sump r u gonna have with it?
I will be cobbling together an acrylic sump and a 10g glass (yay $/g sale yesterday!). The acrylic will hold my fuge and will be fed by a 3/4 line coming off the main 1.5" drain. I will drill the acrylic for a 3/4 bulkhead feeding into the 10g which will take the main drain as well. The 10g will hold he skimmer and return separated by baffles. It's esentially the same set up as my grow-out suytem just positioned differently. The disadvantage is that I like a display fuge and I will only see the narrow side here. The advantage is that I spent $10 and will have 20g of fuge space in a less than 2'x2' space.

The LEDs on my NC28 make everything look awesome when it is just the blues, but the whites are just a little too much for my taste, so I do have tons of faith in the LED technology. I don't want a chiller and I don't want to change bulbs and I waaaaay over-bid the cost when discussing with my wife ("jeez babe, lights could be like twleve hundred. . ."). So I have a lot of choices here.

Per Walt's request, bare bottom.
doesn't surprise me :)

Indeed! Looking good. Great job on the painting.
Thank you. It was intimidating, but after doing it I realized that you can't really mess it up since the glass make it look perfect. I did have a rough time geting the paint inside the rim though. I had to basically fill it full and then tumble the tank around spreading the pain around. Masking is the key for this part of the job.
