Sawdonkey's 220 Thread

Some more pics from last night:

Ultimate Rainbow Prostrata. I really like where this is headed:

Thanos Acro. This is a fast grower. It's green in the center on a top-down shot.

WTF Mother of Pearl. Fairly new, but it's coloring up and the branches are growing. I like this because most corals in my tank lay down a huge base before taking off:

BC Gary's Yellow. This pretty much looks like a odd green slimer to me. Although it is more yellow and bunches up at the tips.
View attachment 12095

BC Sunny X Sunset. Great color, poor PE, slow grower.
View attachment 12096

BC Rainbow Rosaria. Pretty decent grower.

BC Shaggy Del Fuego. I haven't mastered how to get great PE, so this thing is missing the "shaggy."

JF Champagne Coolers. Possibly the fastest growing acro that I've ever had in my tank.

Tyree Icefire Echinata......Not the fastest grower, but I'm looking forward to this getting big!

BC Therman's Rainbow. Adam's mother colony is beautiful. This was a tiny frag when I got it and it just encrusted forever. Finally, it has started to sprout some branches. I think it's about to really take off.

You got one hell of a collection there bud

Thanks Jay. I have a lot more that I haven't shot. Some corals just don't photograph well. Some I can't get to color up right (I'm looking at you Vivids Rainbow). Other just grow incredibly slow.

Yea my vivid rainbow is on same deal. Growing ok but no color. Shows some then fades

The vivid's rainbow needs a lot of light to color up good Gunner.

Thanks Hung. The other one I got from you looked awesome before I lost it in my aefw debacle. The one I have now just won't color up and I have it in a similar area in the tank. I'm sure it will come around some day.

Really liking the way this Ultimate Miyagi is looking.

I'm curious why your sps base out so much before taking off. Mine barely make it to the rock and they start branching. What's flow like in your tank?

I do. Geez tough to please around here...Lol...not sure bout gunners tank but I got skinnier sticks in lower flow. I got more entrusting in higher par. So high flow and high light thicker sticks depending on species of course.

Good call. I know my flow is crazy high and I would assume with the halide and a high par of 450-500 then I'd fall in the same category as gunner but doesn't seem that way. Maybe his par is alot higher. I'll go back through this thread and find the picture he posted with his par numbers

Do keep in mind par readings for leds can be misleading. Light from led is much more intense due it's direct flow of light. So even tho same spot gets 500 on meter good chance is much higher...Might just be my opinion..idk

I do have pretty good flow (one Gyre150 and one of the biggest Jaebos, I forget the model number). I've played around with my LED intensity. I tried to lower the intensity, but I get better colors when I blast the corals. At lower intensity, I simply cannot color up my Vivid's Rainbow like I used to do with my Evergrows turned all the way up. I recently cranked up my Ocean Revives. I'm also holding off on AcroPower and feeding a little less to see if I can bring out more color in a few sticks. I've had my auto pellet feeder feeding three times per day, plus I usually feed some nori and frozen about every other day. Cutting it back a bit.

I do get huge bases on most of my sticks before they take off. Once they take off, they grow pretty clustered. I wouldn't really say thick, but this clusters of small branches.

I've been mixing up my kalk solution stronger and stronger and my alk has been slipping. I tested tonight and it has dropped to 5.1 dkh. Corals all look fine, but I'm slightly worried. I dosed some baking soda tonight to get back to safe levels. I've also pointed another return at the surface to get more evaporation. I also added a few extra spoons of kalk to my normal solution plus a few cap fulls (technical measurement) of vinegar to supersaturate.

Does this sound like the proper remedy? I usually only test alk once per week, but I guess I need to be on top of it as my sps continues to grow. Maybe a calRx might be closer to my future than I thought. I was planning on six more months or more on the kalk.

How's your magnesium level looking? Mag should be keeping your alk more stable.

Sent from my Note 5

I was just thinking about that. It got low a while ago and I dosed it back up to the high 1300's. I think you're on to something. I got lazy on testing it because I never dosed it before and never had issues. I'll test tomorrow.
