Sawdonkey's 220 Thread

I woke up to my whole house smelling like sewage this morning. I don't know what made my skimmer do disgusting, but the smell was WAY worse than usual. Maybe it has something to do with the biopellet topoff I did recently? Time to invest in one of those skim lockers or at least put a bag of carbon on top of the skimmer.

+1 for carbon on the top. I made a tube housing carbon over my skimmer collection cup, have never changed the carbon and never smell it anymore.

+1 for the Avast Davy Jones locker

No smell, reduced maintenance and if you are running a controller it will turn off the skimmer when full and notify you by txt or e-mail :)

Note: Determine appropriate size by the resulting impact on salinity when your skimmer goes crazy, fills the locker, and your ATO refills that amount into your system. I've got the medium one on my ~80g total volume and only have to empty the locker every 4 to 6 wks...unless the skimmer goes crazy :)

Man I love that naso. I want a blonde naso when I upgrade. You still have one of my favorite aquascapes. Everything is looking great. Still jealous of the colors

Thanks, nasos are great fish if you've got the swim space. They're constantly on the go. Very docile fish too. She takes a little heat from my pbt and my emperor from time to time but holds her own.

Gorgeous tank and livestock! Takes some serious dedication to keep the back and overflows clean too.

Thanks. I've had most of my fish except my emperor for more than seven years. I going to pick up five anthias soon to get a little more movement in the water column.

You wouldn't believe how much time I spend scraping my glass and overflows. I'm not a fan of the coralline look.

Very cool! I love how everything looks so clean and perfect. Definitely jealous

Thanks, lots of work scraping and keeping the gravel clean.

Couple more pics from yesterday:

BC Hellraiser- This nearly died from too little light and flow. I moved it and it up and it is recovering and coloring up. Not out of the woods yet.

I'm still curious why you don't have the crazy polyp extension

You and me both. My theory is that it has to do with the intensity of my LEDs. I've tried turning them down, but colors don't look as good.

I've been having trouble coloring up a few pieces and the seem to do better with higher intensity. I'm going to try feeding a little less for a while and see what I can do. The piece I'm talking about is my Vivid's rainbow. It's a brownish maroon and it is showing signs of white/purple/green, the way it should look, but won't get over the hump. I used to have a piece of this and successfully colored it up. I think lighting is fine, but when my big tangs, triggers, and angle take a dump, all coral gets fed, maybe too much. I'm going to limit nutrients for a little while.

Hmm that's a good theory. I only feed every other day so the food thing may have something to do with it too, but the intensity is probably it

OK, I went crazy with the camera last night:

Vivid's Rainbow Delight. After about seven months in my tank, it's finally showing signs of color. This is a tough one to get color out of.

About two to three weeks ago, my JF Bonsai started to STN from the middle of the colony. I cut it off and trimmed the dead pieces and glued the rest back in place. It has continues to lose tissue for a few weeks. It's still showing great PE. Yesterday I noticed my PC Rainbow colony is doing the same thing.

Tonight I ran a bunch of tests to see what's up. Much to my surprise, my nitrates were at at least 25! I never check them because I figure that my bio pellets keep them in check. PO4 is keeping up too, but not crazy. Colors are all good on most of my corals.

Do you guys think the nitrates are causing the STN? Wouldn't I see poor coloration before STN?

What would you do? Water change? (I'm going to do one tomorrow). Add more bio pellets? I have been feeding quite a bit because honestly, with the bio pellets, I've always worries about too little nutrients, not too much.

Thoughts? Recent test results below:

This is exactly what happened with my tank. I never checked it because it never would register on the test, but it spiked and spiked hard. In the process I never lost color on my Acros but they all started stning.
