Sawdonkey's 220 Thread

Good to hear you've got things going in the right direction. I've thought about your bad luck a few times and hoped the best for you as it's such a beautiful setup.

One question I forgot to ask when over. RO Filters pretty new? DI resin still giving you 0 tds?

My filters aren't too old. I switched out my old 90 gpd ro filter for a 150 gpd in hopes I've making water more quickly. Ever since then in get 2 TDS. I'm ok with that given that I make water much more quickly.

I swap resin when needed.

I've had some tank issues lately. I had a spike in nitrates (15-20ish) and that combined with the stress of adding new light, I lost a couple of colonies. I was getting browned out corals due to the NO3 and burnt tips due to the new lights. Im working on getting the NO3 back down and I've dialed the new lights down. I've stoped the coral losses, but I still have some coloring up to do. I think I'm on the right track again.

sorry to hear that man .. 15-20 nitrates normally wont cause that big of an effect IMO .. but your tank is always on spot so may be your corals got used to stable params ..

glad to know they are comming back ...

Hey Gunner,

Sorry to hear about the tank, I'm sure it will recover quickly. I have been real busy with work, so I haven't been on here since I picked up your frag pack last year. Frags were growing fast and I had my tank on autopilot for a few months and I started seeing a few coral start losing coral and a few start to stn from the base up. My parameters were all in line and I couldn't figure it out.

Water changes like you said would perk things up for a few days and then decline. What I found out was my frag rack magnets were rusting badly and leaching. I pulled the rack, did a water change and threw in some chemipure and Prodibio to reseed the filter and my stn has stopped and frags are regaining color. Just a thought, check all magnets. They leach more than rust.

Thanks for the info, although I don't think I have a water issue. The frags in my sump (same water) look great. I'm almost positive it's my new lights. I ran one of the phone app LUX meters under the new ones and under my old Ocean Revives. We'll, the ocean recives are tons brighter. Also, nearly half of the leds on the new lights are white, and they just look terrible and washed out. The blues in the fixture aren't as rich as my ORs. That said, I spent last night soldering in some new LEDs into my old ORs and tonight, they are going back over the tank.

I've been so pissed about my tank that I haven't cleaned the glass in a few weeks, mostly because I don't want to see the dead and dying SPS. The only thing I've completely lost is my Hyperberry, but a lot of corals look really bad. Completely unrelated, but my lemonpeel angel that I've had for seven or eight years turned up missing too.

I have high hopes that my old lights are going to turn things around, but it's not good now. I guess they mean it when they say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

I am just about to set up my new 40 breeder I got amd was debating between what you had(the sanrise) or an OR light. I'm not gonna be doing anything crazy. Mainly LPS with a couple easy SPS mixed in. What would yoir opinion be? Since you have owned both

I'm guessing the reason is you don't have the correct pressure to run it efficiently. I had the same issues . I bought a booster pump and that fixed my problem.

I just got a SSC frag. When that grows a bit more you are welcome to a frag of it to replace the hyperberry. Sorry to hear about your troubles you have an amazing tank.

We'll, if you want a sanrise, I know a guy selling two ......but go OR definitely. They're cheap, reliable, easy to work on, and they grow coral! The only issue is that the fans in them go bad every once and a while, but OR sells them to me for something like $3 each. This is probably more of and issue for me because they're under a canopy. I've also had LEDs burn out after a couple of years (probably related to the fan quitting) but I buy them off of eBay for about .50 ea and solder them in. It's super easy.

Believe it or not, the OR customer service in china is also excellent. They return my emails wishing 24 hours every time. I dropped the end of my fixture in the water one time and blew out the head unit. Emailed OR and the sold me one for $10 or something really cheap. Had it in a couple days.

Sanrise might be ok if they replaced about 75 % of the whites with blues. Even with six adjustable channels, they always look terrible.

Hmm the only thing I'm not sure about its coverage with the OR. I hope I can get away with one. But we shall see. What model sanrise did you end up going with?

One would be too short, but it would look great with two.

so sorry to hear about this buddy .. i cant believe its still going on ..

my way of understanding though .. you are partially right about nothing bad with water params but i think water params and light are also related, for example high nitrates and high light go well together but high phos and high light is not a good go go .. another thing do you think there may be temperature variations between display and sump ? closed canopy and that high light might raise the temp of the display ? may be not by much but may be enough swing from day to night to matter ??

its sad to loose beautiful pieces man, do let me know once your tank is back in good shape and we can cut some things up :)

My Ocean Revives are back up over the tank. I do have a theory that I hope is correct. I always get much better PE on the acros (and even more so with digis) in my sump vs the ones in my DT, even when I had my OR on the DT. My theory is that I put a few whites in my blue channels and the acros didn't like the high power whites on them at all times. I never modded my OR over my sump, so those acros had many hours of just blue.

On wed night, I took all whites out of my blue channels and replaced them with blues. Now my corals will get about seven hours a day with just blue and no high powered white. I hope to see better PE and color.
