SkullV's Aquarium Adventures

Very true!!! Are you going to show us step-by-step layout for it and what types of colors are used?

Only LEDs getting used are royal blue, this is all going inside a canopy so it won't be a nice showy fixture. Everything will be mounted directly to the canopy lid.

Bulbs and ballasts are all ATI:

Actinic
Blue+
Coral +
Blue +

Reflector is the old school 4 bulb TEK individually contoured reflector.

Cool, will be looking for updates! How come no UV leds and you don't think it might be too much blue or that’s what you are aiming like a 20K look?

Don't need added uv with a true actinic bulb and a coral +. It's the beauty of t5, true full spectrum bulbs. Also, never too much blue!

Looking good, as always!

Thanks guys. Looking like all the parts for the T5 retrofit will be in by Saturday so hopefully Sunday it'll be up and running! On a sadder note, I found this guy on the floor last night. Must have escaped when I had the rocks out to catch the six line:

Couple pictures of the new tank residents. I'm only planning on keeping two fish at a time in this tank. The Foxface will be gone in a month or two and will probably get replaced with something smaller that is better suited for a 20g. He has done a great job of cleaning up the CeramEco rock and is almost ready to go. The wrasse was an amazing recommendation from Dave at Aquapros when I called him looking for a cosmetus. Never actually seen one of these in person but the second I saw it, I had to have it. It's a Grey Head Wrasse (Halichoeres leucurus). It should be small enough for this tank for a decent amount of time. Seems like more of a hoverer/picker than a big swimmer.

New lighting is in. It's a T5 retrofit into the matching canopy for the stand. Specs are:

  • ATI Sunpower 2x24w/2x39w Ballasts
  • TEK 4x24" Reflector
  • ATI Bulbs

The bulbs are:

FRONT
ATI Actinic
ATI Blue+
ATI Coral+
ATI Blue+
BACK

Still have to tweak it a little bit and install the fans tonight, but overall I'm very happy with it. My plan is to acclimate the coral for 1 week just running one coral plus and one blue plus, then next week I'll turn on the other two bulbs. The tank just looks SO SO SO much better under the T5 than the LEDs.

That looks way better in person. Looks awesome ted.

Thanks man, much happier now that I rejoined the T5 crew!

LOL...I thought you only had a 5gallon. I was thinking damn a fox face and melenarus in a nano.

No sir, only a 20g but small fish. The foxface will be rehomed shortly, he's done a great job with the annoying algae on the ceramic rock.

Finally finished installing the fan on the canopy and running the lights for their full photoperiod today. With the fan running, the temp didn't even raise .1 degree and the heater even had to kick on a few times (76 degree ambient temp). I installed the fan pointing down towards the water and across one set of end caps, so it serves to increase evaporative cooling and also cools the bulbs.

Also spent 2 hours gluing frags today, Still not 100% sure about the spacing on the three rocks, but I'm somewhat limited by the overflow on the right side. I'm SO much happier with the T5s than the LEDs. Like I've said before, there are areas of coral that were just totally shaded before that are now getting light. While that wll be great after a couple weeks under the new lighting, right now there is a lot of brown going on :(. Let me know what you think:

Center rock and plates (getting some much needed TLC). For some reason my peppermint shrimp go after each plate right after introduction, but after the first day they leave them alone:

Looking good, don't make me go back to T5..dammit

Awesome, looks great!

Bravo sir bravo

lookin good ted ,diggin that digi :) pics gotta be alot easier to take now

Thanks guys! The pictures were pretty easy with the LEDs, just set white balance and mess with ISO, take a ton of pics and delete 99.9% of them! It was actually a bit harder to get the white balance set right with the T5. Probably just because I've been shooting LEDs only for over a year now.

Looking good, don't make me go back to T5..dammit

Do it! Your tank is droolworthy with the LEDs, with T5 it would be even more amazing.

Well, I was hoping to hold off on buying any more pumps until the RipTide was released but wasn't happy with the flow I was getting from just one WP10. I ordered another WP10 that I'll be adding to the overflow side of the tank. I'm not sure how effective they are at pushing the water 30", but I figured with 2300gph coming out of the one side of the tank in a 20g it should be enough either way. That about matches the turnover I had in the SpecV (115x DT Turnover) and the SPS absolutely loved it.
