SkullV's Aquarium Adventures

Thanks! If I had a stand the size of yours there would be some crazy stuff going on in there!

Yeah, there is no way to get the 75 gallon sump out from under the stand. I just hate the baffle setup, but that could be changed fairly easy. How do you like the baffle kit you bought?

Seeing new builds always makes me think shoulda, woulda, coulda about my system. There are so many things I'd do differently if I got a clean start. I love that overflow you're using.

I'm very happy with the baffles I chose. They weren't a kit that he normally sells, I had them custom cut to my specs. If I did it again I would have gone with 1/4" gaps between the teeth though. These teeth are fine but with any more flow they would have a tough time keeping a stable water level in chamber 2 (not that it is that important).

Looking great Ted!

Thanks!

that's too bad about the Maxspect cause the overall styling is sweet...can you change out any of the leds to change the color spectrum?....

Anything is possible, but with the cree chips on a PCB you really have to get good heat underneath them to desolder and resolder. More than likely I would have to use a hot plate and re-chip the entire board. I might order an extracluster and mess with it. They aren't terribly expensive but the controller isn't that amazing either so it's a lot of work for a marginal reward. Might be better off using the housing and redoing the clusters/optics all myself with CREE chips from Rapid and a nice storm controller.

Fun with top down shots...

Someone has a Torch feddish.. Whats the bluish one in the center?

Just a torch I picked up at one of the LFS out here. I'm a big euphyllia fan but jerk knows I'm a sucker for plates too. Planning on adding a trio of nice plates, a meat coral, a pair of scolys, and some type of blue clam.

Could you take a close up of it for me the whitish blue one would be the second from the right. Looks BA.

I can try tonight when I get home from work but the lighting might be too blue at that point. I'll definitely get one for you next time I'm home during the day though. It's more of a translucent neon green than a blue.

I didn't forget about you, it's all closed up at the moment since I was repairing the fans on this stupid razor, but if it opens up anytime soon I'll snap a pic. If not, I'll be home tomorrow when the light cycle is at peak intensity and I'll do it then.

In other news, I made a skimmate collection container today since I'm going out of town for 12 days and I know my girlfriend won't mess with the skimmer. I knew that the phosban reactor fit perfectly so I put together some parts and made a DIY carbon filter for the smell. It all works perfectly and should handle at least 2 weeks of skimmate if not more.

You can also see my DIY carbon filter for the top of the skimmer in this pic. Between the two you can't smell a single thing!

Nice scumbucket!

As a regular traveler, I'd suggest adding a "full sensor/switch" to turn off the skimmer....mine has saved me from overflowing skim more than once.
And once it saved me from whatever sent my skimmer into overdrive and filled the container full of what was mostly just salt water, triggering the ATO to refill that volume.

Check out the Avast pressure switches.

Bonus if your using a controller, the sensor allows it to tell you when you need to empty it :)

Thanks! Definitely adding a float switch. I think I would get castrated if the thing overflowed! I actually have an SL1 on order and a float switch but probably won't have time to install until I get back. Until then I built the carbon filter to be taller than the actual skimmer cup and all of the connections are water tight other than the cap on top. If for some reason the whole collection container and skimmer cup ended up full, the skimmate would just overflow back into the tank.

A couple of new additions:

Still working up a scheme to replace the chips in this Razor fixture too. Current plan is to use the current fixture, controller, optics, and power supply and use new CREE chips from RapidLED on thin sheets of aluminum which would then be attached to the current heat sink (the whole fixture). Until then the photos aren't the best, my apologies. Hope all is well back in Chicago. I was there a couple weeks ago for a few days and really enjoyed feeling cool air again!
