Time for a new start

Okay, a few things. First, replacing a 1000 word thread with a 10 minute video does not save anyone any time, LOL! Second, the tank is looking much better. Third, your tank needs a huge basketball sized hammer to keep that Elegance company (hint) ;)

First..... Jeeze.... can't please you!!!! Next month I am writing about a big white whale!!!!!

Second....Thanks! I think the tank is a lot more visibly pleasing.....and is a lot healthier for sure. Of course.... all I have to do is look at your tank and I am depressed once again!!!!

Third.... I have a spot for it. Maybe it will be the star of a future video update!!!!!!

Hey Dan,

Is your rock work epoxied or zip tied - or does that reefrock stay put because of how it "fits" together? Also, what do you use to clean your acrylic?

Hi Kim! All my rock is simply fit together. In all of the tanks that I have had... I have only just put the rock in....found the best way for it to fit together and left it. This allows me to re-scape the tanks...move new stuff in and out....remove problem pieces....etc. It also creates a little risk. Fortunately I have not had any avalanches..... Got to go knock on wood!!!

I think if you are looking to create a lot of great arches and caves....and a lot of stable open space....it might make sense to tie it...epoxie it ...etc. But you might want to get settled with your layout. For me.... I move stuff around too much and affixing it permanently would be a real pain in the arse. My other tank... is also glass....and that one too just has rock that is fit together. Remember though...if things do shift and move on you.... it could cause a catastrophic event....

As for cleaning the acrylic... I have a magfloat for acrylic that I use to keep the front bow clean. I also have an acrylic scraper I use. On the outside.... I use fresh water and microfiber towel to keep it clean.

Thanks Dan! I love your rock layout. I'm hoping to avoid the epoxy route, if i can - so that i can rearrange if i want/need to. But guess I'll have to see what kind of aquascape I can come up with ...and see how confident i feel in it's stability. Thanks again for the helpful input!

A suggestion if you are starting with dry baserock... do a layout on the floor or table with some painters tape to provide the tank dimensions... and do a dry fit of the rock before you take it to the tank. Also.... I used a hammer and cold chisel to shape some of the rocks to get them to fit well. I did my first layout on a table which gave me a lot of time to move stuff around and create a good solid base that did not need to be tied down.

If you are just starting out.....put your rock in first on the bottom of your tank. Then add sand around the rock. This will help lock the base rock in and give you a nice sound foundation. In reefs if you have gobies or other critters that like to burrow... this will prevent the rocks from shifting killing the digger or worse preventing an avalanche of rock...

I hope this helps. Thanks for the nice comments.

+1 did all this on my current tank, and it worked great!

Well.... here is my monthly update.... Yes.... ETR I will keep things short.

I had a couple of frustrating losses in my 125 the last 30 days. I had a long spine urchin that fell into my beautiful elegance.....which spelled doom for the elegance. My blood still boils just thinking about it. The spines injured the elegance and it just wnet down hill...... fast. I have thus far resited the temptation to toss the urchin out into the snow.... I did however stick him back into the 29 BC where it will stay until I sell it. If anyone is interested it would be ideal for a large sump..... or a large tank. I would enterain a trade for some nice frags....

I have also removed this morning the Reef Dynamics recirculating bio pellet reactor. This thing has clogged....and polluted my tank.... it has clogged again and just is not working as advertised. I would not recommend this reactor for anyone's tank. To me it was a complete waste of money... I think the theory is spot on....but the execution of the product sucks!!!!!! So I have moved it out and moved an Alpha 1 reactor that I had in my 72 to the 125. I originally had an Alpha 2 in the 125....and that thing just cranked out any nutrients. I think ultimately it caused me to starve my tank. The Alpha 2 is a beast... Ask ETR... he has it in his FOWLR and his nitrates went to zero with it. So.... I am hoping the Alpha 1 will do the trick for me. It is rated to 100 gals... I am shooting to get myself to 0-5 on the nitrates and still be able to feed generously. Currently my nitrates are between 5-10.... The tank seems stable and in good shape.

I took a quick iPhone video of feeding time. I feed nori every few days. Almost everyone in the tank swims over and takes part. Even my Trigger! Here is the video.... Enjoy!
