BRS Pukani leaching Phosphates

I use the High Capacity BRS GFO and have been at .00-.07 PPM on my Hanna Phosphate test kit, running through a Avast Reactor. I try to stay at .02 as reading that a phosphate free tank is not good for corals. I have pukani BRS rock and yes it leached for 4 months at high levels. .3 to start and then eventually it went to where its at now. I haven't had any hair algae problems or cyano, Knock, Knock. I will say this though if you run BRS High Capacity and aren't feeding your livestock everyday then you will get to 0 ppm. I may start my skimmer on a timer just so I'm not completely nutrient deficient in the tank. I've been running with BRS GFO for almost 6 months and bought their 1.75 lbs and still have 1/2 of it left. I do run ro/di and my water comes from an aquifer that is amazing. My tds input is 10-14 and output is 0, so nothing is getting in that way that would help fuel the growth.

It appears that my Phosphate issues are back again and worse then before. I haven't had an issue with any algae other then a bout with cyano that has never come back. I took in some frags from a user who was battling hair algae and now it is showing up in my tank. **** him and his frags!!!

I tested phosphates weekly for the past couple months and it usually was in teh range of .1-.2. I tested last night and I'm now up to .3 on the Hannah Checker. I'm planning to drip Lanthanum chloride into a filter sock, as I don't have any interest in burning through GFO while I try to battle phosphates.

Has anyone else done this to get a hold of crazy phosphate readings?

Walt... I literally had my ENTIRE tank COVERED in HA bc of the rock. Happened literally over night...all I did was run phos and within 2 weeks it was gone. I was pulling out clumps. Josh can attest. He saw the before, during and after.

I saw it peeking through before the breakdown. I never had HA until I took in the frags for Jaime so I know that is were I got the HA that is growing in my tank. Even when my Phosphate levels were at .20 I didn't have to battle HA. They are growing in a few patches but not enough to overly concern me. What does concent me is that my Phosphate levels are now at .30 on my hannah checkers and just after water changes, I measure it at .15 sometimes.

Dripping lantham seems to be the most economical, though drastic method, to get a handle on these crazy numbers. I thought I was done with filter socks...so I gave them all away. UGH!! This hobby is bleeding my finances dry!!

I do?!?! What is that? all im using right now is chemipure I need to buy a phosphate reactor myself.

Oops. Wrong guy, sorry. I meant Kratos uses it. I believe Shawn and Mai have used Lanthanum before.
I fixed my phosphate problem by just having 2 fish in my reef tank and have a separate FOWLR tank

Hey Walt sorry to hear about the HA and sorry if its my fault. I'm grateful that u helped me out on my tank crash. I don't want to cause anymore trouble so if u want I can pick up my frags b4 anything else happens. Again I'm sorry if I caused this in ur tank. And thank you for holding them. If it helps I can get u sum Gfo.

This is ALL your fault!!!! You have brought my tank crashing down!!

It's fine. The algae isn't the problem so the frags are fine. There isn't a forest of HA in my tank. It's just in patches. I just need to get the phosphates under control.

i am having some GHA issues in my tank, i know that I dont have enough LR to do propper bio-filtration, my 75g only has about 50lbs. i am adding another 30lbs from a member here and adding a reactor.

what should I run though, GFO, carbon, or chemiprude elite/

does chemipure replace all of the others or what

Im in the same boat. I did not know what was the cause of my cyano outbreak, but i also added some dry pukani rocks and the magnetic reef shelves. I have tried water changers, turkey basting rocks and wet skimming with no success. I will try chemiclean next.

Yep, chemipure elite is a combo but expensive imo. GFO should reduce your po4's which shoud take care of your ha. Carbon won't do squat to get rid of ha.

Cyano is an ancient and strange bacteria. I had it growing in an ultra low nutrient system before. I've had it grow when I increased light intensity. I've had it grow on rocks 8 inches from an mp40. Sometimes you can't nail down the reason you got it but I've had success with chemiclean in the past. No ill effects on coral, fish or inverts. Just make sure you follow the instructions and I opt to run an airstone.

I read something, somewhere about increasing your mag level relatively quickly to get rid of HA and Byropsis. I tried it, my mag level went from 1300 to 1600 or something within a week and wouldn't you know the HA and Byropsis got real pale and melted away. The only negative effect I saw on my corals was the skirts on my zoas got pale as well. A few weeks later though zoas were back to normal and HA and Byropsis were gone and haven't been back since.

not sure where this has gone didnt read all of the pages but BRS pukani sucks, I had to trash 12lbs of it because it was leeching into my tank. Would never buy this again
